[ CHARACTER INFORMATION ]

Name: Mary Weather Hargreaves
Age: 10
Gender: Female
Fandom: Godchild/Earl Cain Saga
Timeline: Volume 8, right after she reads Cain's tarot and predicts his death.
History:  Mary grew up in the slums of London. Her mother killed herself in order to protect Mary from a crazy suitor. From then until she was about nine years old she lived on the streets, making a living by giving tarot card readings. She does a reading for Cain, and as the things she predicts slowly come true, he begins to believe that she must be related to the family, and adopts her into the family. Now a part of high society she has begun training in the arts expected for a young lady to know. Cain does his best to keep her sheltered, but due to her stubborn nature she still works her way into the troubling things surrounding Cain and ends up seeing quite a few deaths. She might not actually be able to do much on her own, she silently supports Cain, keeping his spirits up and giving him someone to protect while offering him her love.

Character Personality: Mary tends to act somewhat older than her actual age in public, though this sort of behaviour was often expected from children of the Victorian society. Still, she is just a child, and is found acting like any other child her age would, enjoying games and stuffed animals. While she is stubborn, it is not as if she won't take 'no' for an answer, especially if it's from her dear older brother Cain. She's very conscious of his love for her and knows that he wouldn't tell her 'no' unless it was for her own good. Of course, being a child, sometimes she just doesn't care, and wants what she wants because she wants it. She's also not beyond falling just short of throwing a fit when she wants something, but she has more dignity than to go into hysterics over something. Instead she's like the child that is told no by one parent, so they ask the other parent. If she sees an opportunity to get beyond Cain's orders to do something that she really wants to do, she'll take it, like the time she convinced Oscar to take her to the opening of the park despite Cain's orders to not. She's also rather aware that she's a cute little girl, and will use that to try to get what she wants.

She's also very compassionate and understanding. She is objective and fair when she meets a new person, not taking anything like appearance or class into consideration when dealing with them. She's sensitive to the hardships that others have been through as well. Even though she now looks like a noble child, her years growing up in the slums and the people she met there are still remembered and kept as friends in her heart. She knows that she has been lucky, but that does not mean that things have been that easy still. Living with Cain, she has seen how people around him keep dying - people he cares about - no matter what he tries to do. She's shared this hardship with him, since they care about many of the same people, but as a result of seeing all the things that happen in the outside world she has decided that no matter how bad things in the outside world might be, she wants to make the home as peaceful as she can and be there with a smile and be there with comforting words.

Mary also has a bit of a temper. She hates the way her brother is with women, jumping from one to another. She also gets defensive when people try to suggest that she might be a spoiled noble who knows no hardships. She also dislikes being belittled for her past or being given false compliments. Despite this, over all she's very kind, generous, compassionate and mostly carefree. Even though she's seen many horrors, she still has been able to maintain a sense of innocence as well as kept a firm grasp on her childhood.

Character Abilities: Mary is very intelligent for a ten-year-old. She is a fast learner, having mastered manners, linguistics, and the piano in less than a year's time. She uses her sharp tongue to 'politely' insult those who anger her, though she will fall into coarser speech with someone she is more familiar with or other children. The time she spent on the streets has also equipped her with a wide range of other useful skills, such as fortune telling. She specializes in Tarot card reading, and is eerily accurate in her readings, with the ability to not only get an idea of the situation for a person far away from her, or even for someone's future. She also is able to see spirits, but she does not usually have much interaction with them. She's also pretty good at giving puppy eyes and playing the innocent girl.

Character Weaknesses: One of Mary's greatest weaknesses is her culture. They have instilled a depiction of how both girls and children should act. She tries to keep up to these standards so as to not bring disgrace to either herself or Cain. Also, while Cain got her the best tutors that he could, and seems to want to make sure that Mary is very well educated, society still did not expect women to learn the same things as men. Right now her curriculum might the the same as a male noble children, but there is still a limiting mindset. Girls were raised in such a way that they were supposed to be the ward of a man their whole lives, be it a father, brother, or husband. Mary does have a very independent nature, and that, along with Cain's nurturing, helps her push past this - as she eventually becomes the heir of the Hargreaves estate - but it is at war with what she is taught to be the proper place.

In addition, she's in her own way very adult. While that might sound like an advantage, it results in her putting a lot of pressure on herself as she tries to look after Cain and support him. She, at one point, says that supporting Cain and being there to smile for him is all she can do, but it's something only she can do. This desire to help and to do more fights against the protectiveness that Cain has for her that results in a feeling of helplessness she tries to fight by being supportive. At the same time, it has become an internal struggle, as she realizes how much she means to Cain. Since he means so much to her, she begins to consider his concerns for her protection in her actions, submitting herself to a kind of imprisonment. She is aware of this cage, and struggles with it since it goes so drastically against her wild nature, but still she wants to try to keep 'blood from staining those little white hands'. However, I expect with the abilities of a weapon, this will become much harder for her to maintain, since her desire to be more of a help will overcome her self imposed limits. At the same time, if she does get injured and upsets Cain, she will feel terribly guilty, creating a kind of tug-of-war between these conflicting feelings.

The fact that she does not often talk about what is stressing her, or the terrible things she's seen and how they've effected her also causes an emotional build-up. While she isn't shown completely breaking down in canon, she does reach a peak when she finds out what Cain's father has been doing, and what he did to Cain, exclaiming, “I'll kill Father with my own hands!” She regains composure quickly, but it helps to show that she's under quite a bit of pressure, and it wears on her more than she lets on. On the other hand, this shows how emotionally strong she is as well.

Another weakness is that she's a fairly normal ten year old Victorian girl. As such, she lacks physical strength, is still very short, and because she's so young, she's not likely to be taken as seriously as an adult might. Even though she has more life experience than most children her age - and even older - she still has plenty of lessons to learn, especially when it comes to trust. She trusts surprisingly easily, and is willing to forgive people for some pretty serious offences, if she thinks the person can change. Aside from the naivety, she is not exempt from most of the other things that make a child childish. This, of course, includes the occasional temper tantrum when she doesn't get her way.

[ SOUL CAMPAIGN SECTION ]

What are the abilities that your character will retain in Soul Campaign? She should retain all abilities except for her ability to see ghosts and read tarot cards.

What are the weaknesses that your character will lose or gain in Soul Campaign? Her weaknesses are not likely to be very effected, though without Cain she will likely be a little bit more reckless.

Keeping the game’s premise in mind, please give us a brief explanation of your plans for your character in Soul Campaign:

Mary is a very independent young girl who is a lot tougher and stronger than most girls her age would be, even of those who grew up on the streets. She will be fighting a balance between being the little sister that Cain can come home to and her desire to fight for the people she loves and take a more active role.

[ MEISTER ONLY SECTION ]

Why your character should be a Meister: Mary is strong-willed and has the skills to be a good leader while having the ability to understand her partner easily. While most children would have a hard time dealing with something like fighting for any reason, she actually would not only be capable, but she already nearly committed murder to get revenge for her mother, showing a fierce and brutal potential even though since then she has worked to be little more than an innocent child. Given the right circumstances she would be likely to again take the offensive.

Meister Ability:
Calming Wavelength- Mary is perpetually understanding and almost always calm. She tends to make other people feel comfortable as well through always being able to see the bright side of things.
