[ Series ] : Persona 4
[ Canon Point ] : After Nanako’s kidnapping, maxed Social Link
[ History ] :
Click me! [ Personality ] : Naoto wants to come across as two main things when people meet her - that she’s competent, and that she’s mature. The way she dresses, talks (both in vocal pitch and vocabulary), interacts with people, and she carries herself is all part of a calculated plan to make people think she is an intelligent, adult, and male detective. This demonstrates both a deep fear of the person she would be otherwise, and strong feelings of superiority; she knows she can trick people that thoroughly because she knows how less competent and observant those around her are.
She keeps very much to herself, very easily embarrassed and angered at even the possibility of revealing skin. Her gender is an issue of contention; while it is debatable whither or not she is transgendered, she is at least very angry towards the social expectations and the place of women in her society, and does not believe that presenting herself as a girl would allow her to accomplish her career goals.
She keeps her private and public lives very separate; while during the games it is only through the social link that you find details about her family life or childhood. She is something of an inventor, able to make headphones or hidden radio contraptions, and greatly admires the detective heroes in novels and television shows, so she likely watched and read them. On the other hand, she makes it her business to know a great deal about those surrounding her, leaving no stone unturned - during the King’s Game she sits and lets everyone around her get punch drunk, hoping to gain information about their activities from their ‘intoxicated state’.
As a detective, she has a strong sense of justice. When confronting guilty parties, she lists their crimes and the facts of their case, allowing all within earshot to know the extent of their crimes. However, she finds a great deal of confrontation within the police institution; as a teenager and a girl, she isn’t taken seriously, thus her androgynous-to-masculine appearance, yet also because of her dogged and stubborn determination of her own theories. For instance, she was removed from the Inaba murder case for continually insisting the police had the wrong suspect. However, the fact that she was called in to begin with demonstrates both her skill and reputation as a detective despite her age; colloquially she is known as the Detective Prince, a moniker she is rather ambivalent towards.
Within new groups, she quickly finds a niche for herself; despite being the last to join the Investigation Team, she rapidly takes an authoritative position though. While not a leader, she is not content to be a mere follower. She is very intelligent and organized, but a difficult team player. She seems oblivious to romantic or even platonic advances, with Kanji’s comments and compliments going straight over her head. She doesn’t have a sense of humor, and when the butt of jokes becomes deeply offended, defensive, and hurt.
[ Strengths/Weaknesses ] : She’s very small and petite, so she cannot command any sort of physical presence. Her age and gender are points of deep contention and can easily be used to fluster her. Her Persona, Yamato-Takeru, is strong against Fire, Light, and Dark spells, and specializes in Light, Dark, and Almighty spells, along with physical skills. She uses a revolver in combat, so she is a good shot. Mentally, she is a fierce component, with strong observation and investigative skills, good deductive reasoning, and a sense of suspicion that does not enter into the realm of paranoia.
[ Other Important Facts ] :
-Was orphaned at a young age, raised by her grandfather. It is implied that her family has some wealthy, coming from a long line of successful detectives, and with a number of servants
-As suggested by her Shadow’s dungeon, she is a closeted fan of sci-fi and robotic shows - such as Phoenix Ranger Featherman R -otherwise aimed for ‘children’.
-Do not touch her hat
[ Sample ] : [There is hard ground underneath her back, and even before she opens her eyes, Naoto understands that there are significant changes to her surroundings. She inhales several deep breaths to still her beating heart, and shivers. Her clothes are heavy on her - she’s drenched, from head to foot]
Calm down. [Demanding that of herself, Naoto stands slowly. She takes off her hat and wrings it out, tapping it back onto her head and looking carefully around] . . . This is not Inaba. [Her voice remains calm. She reminds that hysterics do not help these types of situations]
[Firstly, she’s lying in the middle of the road. Consciously, forcing her walk to be loose and natural, she walks to the sidewalk and leans against the side of a building. First and foremost is to not look frightened or suspicious. She slides her hand inside her pocket and feels - to a very great sigh of relief she cannot help but utter - the bulge of her revolver at her side. Best not to check its function in the open, but she can bluff its use, should trouble come soon]
[Secondly, Naoto notes the buildings - their architecture, size, occupancy. They’re European, richly detailed and even gilded in places, but she can’t recognize them. She can rule out a Japanese city, at least. The thought sits poorly in her gut, a knot twisting and writhing. There doesn’t seem to be anybody walking about, no indication this city street is lived in or used in the slightest. She turns to look inside the store, and though the shelves are fully stocked, the lights on, there are no customers and no attendant behind the counter]
[Thirdly . . . Naoto looks above her. Her eyes deceive her, she’s sure. There isn’t any sky, merely something clear miles above her head and, above that, swimming schools of fish, sharks, sunlight refracted in deep blue sea. However, she then chuckles dryly, exasperated, to herself]
I’m in the television world . . . that is the logical explanation. [Strangely, this comforts her. Explanations for the emptiness, the extraordinary, the void of activity slide into position in her mind. She’s on familiar territory now. She draws her revolver out, clicking off the safety, and holds out her other hand before her] Yamato-Takeru [The phantom of a tarot card appears, hovering in her palm, and Naoto flicks it away in lieu of summoning her Persona] First priority . . . locating Souji.
[She looks back above her, at the fish and water beyond the glass dome] I wonder . . . if this is Nanako-chan’s dungeon. [Naoto walks with a steady pace, her gun drawn, held in a clenched hand, but not obvious or provocative.]
