She knew she was late.
She knew she was late in the fact that she was cursing herself for taking a cab so late from her apartment. She was cursing the fact that it was raining and a cab in Los Angeles wouldn’t move faster than a snail. She was also cursing the fact that she couldn’t just get out and run. It was the one day that she didn’t dare be late and it had to rain. She cursed herself yet again but smiled as the cab pulled in to park at the restaurant. “Thank you,” she said as she passed him the money for the fare.
“You’re welcome,” he said. “And anybody mad at you about being late is a fool in my book.”
Ellie smiled as she got out of the cab, dodging the raindrops as she made her way to look into the restaurant. She just rested there for a moment, watching him play with his phone at the table. She could tell he was nervous, probably due to the fact that she was late, but maybe just a bad day at work. Balthazar does have those she thought to herself as she made sure that she looked alright. She walked in and made her way to the table, sitting down. “Hi,” she said to him as he looked up from his cell phone. “Sorry I’m late.”
The waiter came by, pouring champagne into her glass. “You’re actually right on time,” Balthazar said with a grin.
“What are we celebrating?” Ellie asked with a smile. “The fact that we made it through the year without breaking up?”
“No,” he said and chuckled. “Look down.”
She looked down, blinking as she saw the square black velvet box on her plate. She opened it and smiled as she saw inside of it before closing it.
He raised an eyebrow. “What?” He asked with a smile.
“I love you. And yes,” she said as she opened the box again and put on her engagement ring. He moved and kisses her lovingly, taking her hand in his as they celebrated the start of their new life together.
