In my last entry, I was hoping to find another job in order to pay off my car repairs. Now, I'd be happy to have one job. I'm getting ahead of myself. Let me back up a bit.
I never was able to find a second job. I continued paying $200/month to Brakes Plus. The holidays came and went. The kids were happy with the whole family gift of the PS4. I realized that I was coming up on another three paycheck month in January. This was a chance to pay off my repairs and finally get my car back.
Now I think I mentioned that I had been working from home in earlier posts. On 1/7, at the end of my day, I said goodbye to my manager over IM (like I usually do) and he said goodbye. Then he added something sort of cryptic: give me a call, in the morning. I had to sleep on that.
The next morning, I called him and he dropped the bomb. Due to company restructuring, my position was being eliminated. My final day was to be 2/7.
To his credit, my manager was as broken up about it as I was. I had worked there for seven years. He was upset and gave me a chance to make some OT. I used Ginny's car to go into the office so I could do the OT. It was helping the network team consolidate the buildings in order to sublet. On 1/31, I was able to get my car back.
On 2/5, the coldest day of winter (-28 f), I was driving home and it was like my car stopped getting gas when I pushed the pedal. I called Brakes Plus and they sent a tow truck. I had to wait for over an hour in the freezing cold in car that wouldn't get warm. The truck arrived and dropped me and the car off at Brakes Plus.
The next day, Brakes Plus told me that the ECM (Electronic Control Module or the computer that runs everything) went out. They advised me to go on ebay and find a used one and they would install it for free. I found one for about $40 and they put it in. Of course by this time, I'd already worked my last day and was about two weeks into being unemployed.
I'm on unemployment right now and still have a bit of severance money left over. I was called by two recruiters, last week, so there's a little hope that things are picking up.
