This is why I love college.
Senior year has been rough so far. I have had a major case of senioritis. I really have been hating my classes and hating my homework and just yearning to be done with it all.
However, the past weekend gave me a reminder of what I love about college. I love the social aspect. The life moments that are worth the $20,000+ that I spend each year to be here.
Thursday night I spent with my close friend Elisabeth. (We have been friends ever since freshman year when we met as a floor at the all school block party.) We went to dinner together at Avantis, then we went to the honor's program discussion night "Can an educated person think about God" which in reality ended up more so being "Why do humans need religion". After the discussion we came back to my apartment and I made us some pina coladas with malibu coconut rum...yum! As we sipped our drinks we had a nice couple of hours of chit chat...we even exclaimed how those moments are the kind we will miss when we leave this place.
Friday night I went to East Peoria for a sleep-over at my Bible study leader's house. It was amazing fun. We had a bonfire with smores, played Apples to Apples, and watched 'Fever Pitch' and 'Jesus Christ Superstar'. The highlight of the evening had to be when we tried to take a group picture...without anyone to actually take the picture and without knowing how to use the timer. Pam kept racing back and forth between the camera and the group...it was hilarious, I never knew she could move that fast!
Saturday night I intended to spend studying. However, there was a vicious storm which knocked the power out. Still determined to study I ventured into the apartment hallway to utilize the emergency light. Shortly after...and only having the chance to get one page read...my neighbor, Mike, came out of his apartment to use the emergency light as well to write some lyrics in his journal. Apparently I have known Mike for two years...but being the jerk that I am I had forgotten his name. I recognized his face and knew he had to be involved in theatre somehow...but couldn't exactly place him. While we were chit chatting I was trying to remember his name...I came up with either Jason or Mike. I considered asking him but when he mentioned that it was funny that we live right by each other after knowing each other for two years...well...I felt bad to say the least. At that point I was hoping neither of my roommates would come into the hall so that I wouldn't have to do introductions...but then Laura came out...and I just froze. Luckily she is outgoing enough to hold her own. He came into the apartment and introduced himself...MIKE! Phew. So with the power out he came over and talked to my roommates while I continued to attempt to study...without success. Mike's roommate came over and introduced himself as well ...Dave...Dave tried to show off quite a bit. Eventually Mike brought his guitar over and started playing and singing. At this point I completely gave up on the studies. Live music is something I cannot pass up. He sang a few covers as well as pieces that he had written. Hours went by and finally the power came back on. However, sitting in the candlelight was too much fun. So we kept the lights off and Mike kept on playing...plus he gave us his VH1 behind the music. Learned a lot about that kid.
All in all...it was a great weekend. A weekend that I know I will miss. These are the college experiences that I will cherish.
AND...Tuesday night the roomies and I will be going to see Mike perform at Old Chicago! What fun.
