When my dear sweet brother Fred and I found the Marauder’s Map in our first year, we promised each other that we would never, ever give it to anyone. Sure, we’d share it’s incredible information (mostly because Lee would have hexed us in our sleep if we didn’t), but that map was going to stay ours, and then our children could deck it out over who got it next.
When Ron let it slip that Harry couldn’t go to Hogsmeade, I came up with the idea of letting him borrow the map so he could sneak out of the castle. Fred thought it would be better to lead him out ourselves, using the map, that way he’d know about it, but we didn’t have to actually leave it. Somewhere in the middle of the debate came the idea of actually giving the map to Harry. I don’t remember who thought of it (our conversations can get rather confusing), but Fred seems to think it was me.
I don’t regret giving the map to Harry. It’s true, we did know every passageway already, and the two of us were more than adept at sneaking out in the middle of the night without the map’s aid. But at the time, I definitely didn’t think giving the map to Harry was a good idea. It was like Postpartum Depression almost, we were losing something that we’d become so incredibly attached to.
But you know what? We did enough wicked things without it. And Harry needed it more than us. So no harm done.
