The Island

My mother doesn't like Scarlett Johansen because of her pouty lips and there were what seemed lots of close ups on those lips during the movie. For all the reports that it wasn't a good film, I quite enjoyed The Island

There was some violence (ew nail gun!) that I hid under my jacket for and watched C's face grimace and thought well if she's grimacing, I'm glad I'm not watching it!

It definitely was gripping to watch, very exciting. I would recommend seeing it.

Ewan McGregor questions his existence, his job and has nightmares. He is curious and breaks the rules, he is sneaky and his sneakiness leads him to find out that the earth hasn't been contaminated as he has been led to believe but he is a clone living in a facility to keep him healthy until his organs are needed. The "products" are kept from questioning their existence, why there are no children and why people keep disappearing by having a lottery where "winners" are sent to "The Island" the only healthy place left on the planet. New clones are said to be people rescued from the contaminated earth. There names are the last name of their "sponsor" eg Tom Lincoln, the number from the area their sponser is from 006 is LA in California an dthe last is from the product line which ages them eg Echo which means they were produced 3 years ago. So Ewan McGregor's name is Lincoln Six Echo and Scarlett is Jordan Two Delta. Jordan has been chosen to go to the Island so Lincoln rescues them and these two are on the run and manage to escape. They are like children in their knowledge of the word of slang, alchol and money. They have been educated up to the level of 15 year olds though the knowledge of sex (and assumedly the drive) have been suppressed. So of course when they do discover sex it all neatly falls into place. There were some ridiculous elements - look out for the "R" falling. It's in the trailers and very stupid and very unlikely. Ok so a lot of the film is very unlikely but there is suspension of disbelief and then their is the sublimely ridiculous. There is some moralising and some be careful or this might happen to you and be careful how we treat our world and all that. It isn't as heavy handed though as the moralising of Minority Report and overall I throughly enjoyed it except for some violent parts which had me wincing. The violence though was mostly integral and part of the plot line and not terribly gratuitous and some of the violence isn't up close and personal so you don't see the results of it, no blood and guts for me thank you.

Currently reading I can Jump Puddles, me talk pretty one day and Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil. So I am keeping busy.
