summary: so, cook feared for dublin in a way.
note(s): so, over at cookleta_etc there was a cookleta appreciation post, and joshuazgirl128 said that they wanted something with puppies. so, i wrote this. :D

cook's not sure that this is a good idea. but, david had insisted that dublin needed a friend so that when they were away on tour, he didn't just have andrew (not that andrew wasn't great, david had said, but he wasn't another dog), but had somebody could play with when andrew was being a lazy ass (that's what cook called him, not david because david would never say something like that, even at twenty-one years old). and, cook couldn't really resist david, so he caved in and they bought another puppy.

the puppy was a little beagle who was, according to the pet store owner three months old. "a brand new, pup! just got him in yesterday!" the clerk had told them, and david thought it was fate that they got the puppy. cook on the other hand, wasn't so sure. sure, the puppy was adorable (not that he would beat out dubs because dubs was his first puppy), but cook wasn't too sure how dubs was going to handle the puppy.

when dubs had been introduced to mr. sixx, cook had feared for dublin's life. sure, he knew that mr. sixx was kind, gentle dog, but he was massive compared to a four month old dublin at the time. mr. sixx could easily crush poor dublin if he didn't like him, but thankfully, they both had liked each other right away, and david didn't have to worry about mr.sixx eating him.

but now, dublin was older - four years older - and he wasn't too sure how well he would get along with a new puppy, especially when cook knew that the puppy would be getting a little more attention then dublin due to the fact that puppies were more energetic and needed more attention (plus, you needed to pay more attention them so they didn't shit and piss on the floor either). so, cook feared for dublin in a way.

"dublin!" cook called when they walked into the house, puppy in david's arms, and within moments, cook could hear dublin's paws clacking against the lament floor in their household before he appeared around the corner. his ears were perked up and his tag was wagging furiously. cook smiled at his puppy (even though dublin was four, he still considered him a puppy) and bent down to scratch dublin's head. "hey there boy! guess what? we got you a new friend," cook had told him in a high pitched, happy voice.

dublin didn't seem to pay attention to his words, but when david had bent down and set the puppy down on the floor, dublin was focused on the puppy next to him. automatically, the puppy who they had named harper sniffed at dublin, who just looked at the other dog, before jumping on dublin. dublin quickly backed away, and cook automatically went to grab the puppy to stop him from going after dublin, but david held out a hand. "just wait," david had whispered, and cook had looked at david, who was smiling at the two pups. cook looked back to dublin and harper, and once again, harper was going up to dublin, who was still a little nervous about this whole "new dog" thing.

after a few moments of this back and forth (and them moving into the living room because it would be more comfortable there since there was carpeting and the little pup wouldn’t be sliding all over the place), it seemed that dublin had finally gotten use to harper. well, at least somewhat.

though, it didn't take long for dublin and harper to become the best of friends. harper would follow dublin around almost all the time, and dublin didn't seem to mind. they would go outside and play together in the backyard, and would eat dinner together, and even sleep together.

"they're like a us, in dog form," cook commented one night, his eyes glued to dublin and harper, who were curled at the end of his and david's bed (harper had gotten up there thanks to cook's help) as he rested his chin on david's shoulder, arms wrapped around the younger male's waist.

david smiled and looked back at cook. "yeah, they kind of are, aren't they? and, you thought this was a bad idea," david reminded him.

"hey! dubs is my first dog, and i was concerned for his well-being, okay?" cook said, and david just let out a laugh as he turned around in cook's arms.

"but, aren't you happy we got harper?"

"of course i am," cook whispered before leaning forward and pressing a soft kiss to david's lips. "now, dubs has somebody to sleep with other than us so we can have some more. . .adult time."

david felt himself blush red, and slapped cook's chest lightly as cook let out a small laugh before unwrapping his arms from around david's waist. "though, i guess i'm gonna have to keep my hands to myself tonight, won't i?" cook asked, looking back to the two pups once more.

david just let out a small laugh. "i guess so," he said before pulling cook into the bed, careful not to disturb the sleeping puppies.
