Six hours left in 2006.  My father, after ten minutes of screaming at my mother, has retreated to his office.  My mother is walking around with a strained expression, my sister is nowhere to be found, my best friend is sick, the friend who said he’d call hasn’t and the people I left messages for have yet to return them.  I owe the manager of my barn $20 because I forgot to turn some lights off and according to her message, “yes (she’s) mad.”  I can feel a headache creeping up on me and there’s this awful taste in my mouth, like acid or something rotten.  There’s still no snow, and it’s enough to send me screaming for Al Gore.  So much for ending the year on a good note.

In general, this year has been a mixed bag.  A lot of lasts, a lot of firsts.  I’ve probably changed, grown, all that, though right now I’m not exactly sure how.  I hope I have, anyway.

WHAT SONG WILL ALWAYS REMIND YOU OF 2006?
“Summertime” by Mae will always be about this past summer.  Always.

COMPARED TO THIS TIME LAST YEAR ARE YOU:
a) Happier or Sadder?
Sadder, unfortunately.

b) Thinner or Fatter?
Haven’t really changed in that department.

c) Richer or Poorer?
Poorer.  College does that to a person.

WHAT DO YOU WISH YOU'D DONE MORE OF?
So many things.  Seen more movies, read more books, written more stories, spent more time with certain people, traveled.

WHAT DO YOU WISH YOU'D DONE LESS OF?
Sitting in front of my computer melting my brain and wishing I was doing something interesting.

HOW WILL YOU SPEND CHRISTMAS?
Erm, well, Christmas is over, but I rode my horse and watched lots of BSG with my mother.

DID YOU FALL IN LOVE IN 2006?
I plead the fifth on this one.

HOW MANY ONE-NIGHT STANDS?
Hmmm.  None.

DO YOU HATE ANYONE NOW THAT YOU DIDN'T HATE LAST YEAR?
Yeah.  It was probably inevitable given how many new people I’ve met this year.

WHAT WAS YOUR GREATEST MUSICAL DISCOVERY?
Jesus and Mary Chain

WHAT WAS YOUR FAVOURITE FILM OF THE YEAR?
The Squid and the Whale

WHAT DID YOU DO ON YOUR BIRTHDAY, AND HOW OLD WERE YOU?
Nineteen, I went to a protest in NYC against the genocide in Darfur and the U.N.’s lack of involvement.

WHAT ONE THING WOULD HAVE MADE YOUR YEAR IMMEASURABLY MORE SATISFYING?
Bringing my friends to college with me (see last post).

WHAT KEPT YOU SANE?
Various television shows.  The internet.  My ipod (when it worked).  A certain purple-haired someone and her willingness to talk me down numerous cliffs and off of abundant ledges.

WHICH CELEBRITY/PUBLIC FIGURE DID YOU FANCY THE MOST?
Katee Sackhoff, but only when she’s in character as Starbuck.

WHAT POLITICAL ISSUE STIRRED YOU THE MOST?
Hard to choose.  Right now either the war in Iraq or the genocide in Darfur, but throughout the year I think global warming and general environmental devastation got me consistently the most upset.

WHO WAS THE BEST NEW PERSON YOU MET?
Probably the drunk guy who serenaded my friend and I from beneath our window in Paris at 1a.m.  Seriously though, I met a lot of cool people.

TELL US A VALUABLE LIFE LESSON YOU LEARNED IN 2006:
It’s cheesy, but people will surprise you if you give them a chance.  Also, fake meat made out of soy products doesn’t taste half bad so long as you ignore the texture
.
