Two Life.
Something sacred. Something some people take for granted. Something you only get one chance in.
Some lucky people had it easy, while others less fortunate had it hard.
For Kim Jaejoong you could say it had it both ways, yet the latter started to take its toll during the midst of his career.
Being born into a small family of four, Jaejoong got to learn the importance of love to the point where he knew life was precious. Really precious. Being in such a tight unit with his older sister and parents, he learned to value life and everything within it. Love, family, friends, career, money.
Being a police officer taught him to appreciate them even more. However it also happened to be both the worse and best decision of his life.
The process of being a respected member of the law was the easy part of his life. He knew since he was a little boy that he wanted to follow the footsteps of his father in becoming someone who would have a part in protecting their city and having an opportunity in making a change to better their country. His father had been a lawyer during the early years of his career and for the last ten years he was a highly respected judge. The advantage of Jaejoong having a father in such a highly respected career was that Jaejoong was able to fast-track his way in becoming a detective, as people were able to consider his application due to the familiarity that he was Judge Kim JiSuk's son.
As a police officer, Jaejoong got to experience firsthand those people who took those values of life for granted and the people who would do anything to have the opportunity to gain those values.
There were people on the edges of buildings threatening to end their life in an instant, complaining life didn't treat them right and that people never understood them. Whilst on the other hand there were families weeping at the bedside of a loved one that could slip away in a deep sleep forever. Those people would give anything to have an extra minute to let the person know how much they love and respect them.
People were wasting their money and lives away on drugs, alcohol, slot machines to serve their addictions, where on the streets of Seoul there were many hungry souls that would kill to have a small fraction of their cash to serve their own hunger.
People took those things for granted, not thinking that in the world not everything revolved around them, other people not as fortunate as them existed in the world that would love to have another chance to have an education, get a decent job and put their hard earn wages to good use.
Jaejoong who was all too familiar with these scenarios would never imagine that they would be part of the reason why being a policeman was suddenly becoming a deep regret.
*Flashback*
"Hello?"
"Kim Jaejoong-shi, we have something that belongs to you..." a heavily disguised voice haunts Jaejoong through his cell sending chills down his body.
"JAEJOONG-AH, HELP ME!!! THEY'RE GOING TO KILL ME!!!" the voice behind the terrified cry which made Jaejoong's heart drop instantly as the familiar voice cried helplessly for his help. Clenching his fist in anger, he knew the very people who were behind this.
"You fucking bastards better not hurt her, or I-"
"Or you what Jaejoong-shi, send us to prison. Oh 'boo hoo' I'm really scared, no really I'm literally shaking in fear right now...hahaha!" The 'voice' taunted sarcastically.
"I swear, you hurt her, I'll do more that send you to prison!"
"Aish, no need to get so angry, we can't have good old Kim Jaejoong turning into a corrupt cop can we? What would your father think? How about we do a deal?"
"You think I want to do a deal with a piece of shit like you?"
"You'll do a deal with us if you want her out alive"
"..." Jaejoong froze; he would do anything to make sure she was safe.
"You'll meet us at the old warehouse at the Gangnam estate at 10 o'clock tonight, oh and bring Jinnie with you..."
"What!?" Jaejoong shouted to a continuous dialling tone. The 'voice' had hung up, leaving Jaejoong’s heart and mind in knots not knowing what to do best...
~~~~~~
Pushing against the wooden door which had been left partially opened welcoming Jaejoong into the eerie, bitter atmosphere of the abandoned warehouse.
Slowing dragging Jinnie towards the faint light in the far corner, Jaejoong breathed heavily afraid of what he was about to face. In his whole career in becoming a police officer so far, Jaejoong had never experience this sense of fear that he is feeling right now.
Jinnie, as his fellow members call him, was part of a very large gang involved in the drug importing in Seoul. This gang was known for the dodgy dealings, their resort to violence, their resort for revenge but nobody had ever found any evidence to link them with these crimes.
Anyone that would mess with them would face dreaded consequences.
Jaejoong had been assigned this case to solve six months ago, spending most of his days in the company of his team and in spending his nights at his office rather than in the comfort of his bed, he was determined to crack this case and stop these dealings.
After the gruelling six months of research and following leads, his team finally arrested a member of the gang. However questioning him was itself an exhausting mission, hours had gone by in the interview room and as Jaejoong felt like he was finally getting somewhere with Jinnie, he received that dreaded phone call.
The sound of crashing raindrops against corrugated plastic and the loud moaning of the metal foundations reverberated throughout the empty room, Jaejoong's eyes searches for any kind of movement that belonged to someone other than Jinnie and himself.
There in the corner sat the hostage gagged and attached to the old wooden forgotten chair, with the spotlight on her, her tear stained cheeks became visible. Her muffled cries became louder and more distressing as the worried young man approached her.
"Here, you got what you wanted, now let her go!" Jaejoong shouted at the men surrounding her.
"Jaejoong-shi, you didn't think it would be that easy, did you?" A voice echoed into the room, looking around, Jaejoong tried to distinguish where the voice was coming from. He knew it was the leader, but other than the knowledge that he was the person in charge of these operations, no one knew who he was or what he looked like, not even his group of men.
"Look, stop playing games, you've got Jinnie now can I have Soyeon back!"
"In order for me to do so, you have to drop this case, leave it unsolved forever..."
"It's not up to me!"
"You are in charge of this case; you can do anything if you put your mind into it"
"Do you really think it's that easy?!"
"It's easy if someone's life is at risk!" the 'voice' retorted.
"Then let it be my life, not her...she has her whole life ahead of her, she has priorities"
"Aww, you almost got me teary Jaejoong-shi. It would be too easy to kill the cop, but killing the cop's-"
"PLEASE!" Jaejoong pleaded, "I beg you, don't hurt her. Please don't hurt my sister"
Jaejoong fell to his knees as he crawled towards his sister hugging onto her legs, while the powerless women cried unable to comfort her younger brother as a tear rolled down his cheeks.
The sound of Soyeon and his cries filled the warehouse, the melody of the cries was slowly drowned out by a different tune.
Police sirens!
"You fucking punk, you called the police!" the 'voice' suddenly roared in anger.
Jaejoong looked up confused "the police? No wait, I didn't call them!" waving his arms to grab the men, anyone's attention as everyone scrambled nervously around the room.
"Kill them both!!"
"NO!" Jaejoong hurried to his feet and fought off the men who were about to point guns to the siblings’ head.
Kicking, punching, pushing, pulling, Jaejoong put his all into protecting his sister and himself.
As police officers evaded the warehouse, the scene was suddenly a daze. Jaejoong didn't know who he was fighting off, unaware that he was slowly trailing away from his sister.
Grabbing hold of one of the men, their hands were above each others head, trying to gain possession of the gun.
Bang!
The sound of a single gunshot filled the room.
Everyone froze, as they looked amongst each other trying to locate where the loud sound came from.
Jaejoong slowing turned on the heels of his leather shoes.
Noona...
His legs could no longer support him as he felt a large part of his heart had just been cut out and trampled on continuously.
A single bullet to the chest was all it took.
Collapsing to the floor, he watched his sister's soul in the distance disappear right before his eyes.
Dragging his feet reluctantly to the pool of blood where Soyeon's body laid, he held her lifeless body in his arms "I'm so sorry noona, I'm so sorry..." Jaejoong repeated those words hours on end that night, rocking her body, burying his head into her neck. Unable to shed a single tear after her death.
*End of Flashback*
Four years on, Jaejoong was able to properly smile, laugh and work again, but behind those happy expressions were the images of cradling his sister that night which would always be there, engraved in his mind haunting him forever.
During the first couple of years after the tragedy, Jaejoong fell into depression. Blaming himself for his careless decision that resulted to his sister's death, although the police being at the scene that night was nothing to do with him. It was his behaviour that raised the alarm to his officers.
* Flashback*
Going to the police station that night, Jaejoong's mind was all over the place. Grabbing the keys, he let the prisoner out of his cell and sneaked him out of the police station.
All it took was the replay of the security videos which raised the alarms at the police station.
Knowing that Jaejoong wouldn't just help Jinnie out without a good explanation, they realised the only reason why he would do such a thing was because he had a lead. Realising Jaejoong was acting hastily and could get himself into serious danger if he didn't have any back up, they sent a few officers to follow him not realising the damage they were about to cause.
*End of Flashback*
Not only did Jaejoong blame himself, he was also blamed.
Not by his parents, his parents realised it was a terrible mistake, a mistake that could have resulted in both their children being buried six foot under. They couldn't bear seeing their son so distant, so unhappy, so unlike the forever smiling Jaejoong that always brought a smile to their face. They hated seeing their son mentally slipping away from them.
The person that blamed him was his nephew, the only son of his older sister, seventeen year old Changmin.
When Soyeon was twelve her parents revealed to her that she would be an older sister to a new additional to the family. Despite the twelve year gap between Jaejoong and his sister they got on really well, they were 'soul mates' as they liked to call each other.
Soyeon had Changmin at the age of twenty, being a single parent was tough on her. Being the young doting Uncle, young Jaejoong was quick to take on the role of being the 'man' in Changmin's life.
Therefore the 'man' in his life, whom Changmin loved, respected, depended on, not being able to save his mum crushed him.
It became even harder for the pair when Changmin moved in to Jaejoong's apartment.
The impact his mother's death affected Changmin the most and soon his behaviour was erratically getting out of control, beyond the help of his grandparents.
Sending him to live with his uncle was the only option, as Changmin had no one else. His grandparents thought that both males would be able to comfort each other and get through the ordeal together.
However it was never that easy, the actions behind the words were not as straightforward as they imagined.
The resentment Changmin felt towards Jaejoong only sent him into further depression, he let Changmin push him, shout at him, spit in his face. It was what he deserved.
However his nephew was now uncontrollable, stealing, and vandalising property. He became lost.
Watching his nephew get on the wrong side of the law, coming home drunk, it finally opened Jaejoong's eyes.
How could he let Changmin get like this? What would his sister be thinking watching her once so quiet and obedient son get to this point?
From that point he was determined that they were going to get through Soyeon's death together and prevent Changmin from any trouble.
*Flashback*
"Yah get off me!"
"Sit down, we need to talk" Jaejoong calmly spoke, sitting the young boy onto the sofa.
"I don't want to talk to you, I'm going out!" the aggressive boy retorted, standing up ready to walk away from his uncle.
"No, you will sit down and listen!" Jaejoong finally snapped holding onto Changmin's wrist.
Changmin stood still with his back towards his uncle, screwing his face he reluctantly sat down.
"Look I know you hate me and I know how much you want to get as far away from me as possible..."
"Huh! Finally we agree on something" Changmin muttered.
Jaejoong continued as he ignored Changmin's small interruptions.
"But I'm your uncle, and I'm supposed to be responsible for you. I know you blame me for your mother's death, but don't you think I haven't suffered. I hate myself too you know...your mother would hate to see you like this now" putting his hand over Changmin's.
"Don- don't talk about her!" Changmin's head hung low, as he snatched his hand away from Jaejoong's.
"...look I promise I will get the guys that's done this to us, but please don't take you anger out on anyone else, let me help you get through this, it would be what your mum wanted."
"..."
"Changmin..."
Changmin's body was slowing quivering as tears were slowly falling down his cheeks, softening his frown.
"I'm sorry..."
Jaejoong embraced the young boy as tears slowing filled his eyes; finally both uncle and nephew were able to shed the tears that had been trapped inside them for so long.
*End of Flashback*
From that moment on, Jaejoong took life in every stride it came in.
Now his job as a police officer was not just a job to improve his country, but a job that would also help lost souls in need of help. It was no longer random people that come and go in his life but people that were going to be part of his life, people he wasn't going to take for granted.
