03 “He’s yours.”
“What?”
“Jinwoo…he’s your son.”
Junsu hand slid down to Yoochun’s hand squeezing tightly.
“Sorry.”
“W-why didn’t you tell me sooner?”
“I know it wasn’t right to keep the fact that you had a son away from you but the only thing that ran through my mind was that I would constantly hurt you no matter what. I felt guilty at first, for leaving you and everything behind, the thought of suddenly coming running back and thinking you’ll accept me with open arms was hard. It wasn’t acceptable.”
“So why did you leave in the first place?”
"Back then it was so different, if I knew what I do now back then none of this would have happened. I wouldn't have let her poison me with her lies, but it did and I guess it was a test to see who was stronger..."
"My mother?"
"Yeah, she put on a great act. Ha, she should get her Oscar for her performance. That mask of her's was very convincing; she got me almost to the very end, her and that 'doctor'. All that because she didn't like who I made her son 'become'."
"Doctor?"
"That doctor who told me I lost the baby, he wasn't even a doctor in the first place."
"That evil woman."
"She must have really hated me."
"I'm so sorry Junsu-ah."
"Don't be, it was never your fault. I was too naive and caught up with everything to see the truth."
"But you suffered because of my mother, you went through the past five years with Jinwoo alone, I should've been there, I should've tried harder to look for you."
"How could you? We were constantly on the move; there would have been no way you could have found us."
"But I did, I'm so glad I did."
"Me too…"
Yoochun’s responds to Junsu’s touch, grasping onto his hand even tighter, they smile. The first real smile in five years.
“What are you going to do about your parents?”
“There’s nothing I can do.”
“So you’re just going to leave it like that?”
“Yes. I’ve put them through too much that to bombard them with another load would be too selfish of me; Jinwoo may be too much for them at his age.”
“So what are you going to do? You’re not leaving again are you?”
“Back then we wanted perfect, but I can’t give you perfect anymore. The things that happened-”
“The things that happened are in the past, forgotten. I don’t need that perfect.”
“The things that happened changed everything. My parents won’t allow me to return home because the day I left wasn’t at the home I lived with them; they insisted that I should go back to MY home. My home meaning right here. ..”
“Does that mean..?”
“If you’ll have us…?”
Their first embrace in five years. Yoochun pulls Junsu into the personal space he had not let anyone else into, wrapping his arms around the younger man’s waist. He breathed in Junsu’s scent which still somehow remained the same as he remembered.
“Always. Here is where you belong, it had never changed. What’s changed is that our perfect now involves Jinwoo.”
The whisper tone of Yoochun’s voice gave Junsu the comfort that he thought he had lost ages ago. Everything Yoochun was, Junsu was the complete opposite.
“After all I’ve done to you, the hurt and pain I’ve caused you, you’re still welcome me with open arms. Sometimes I hate how precious you are, you are one in a million Park Yoochun. I don’t deserve you.”
“You’re right I don’t. But my heart won’t beat for no one else, so I’m stuck with you you idiot! My idiot. I fucking love you Kim Junsu.”
Their cheeks brush against each other’s and everything around them is suddenly a blur, complete silence surrounds them.
Yoochun leans in, lips getting closer and closer, eventually touching. Eyes closing, a protective blanket of warmth envelopes them. No one would hurt them now.
Their first kiss in five years. Like their very first kiss, it was ever so gentle, both afraid of taking that extra step. Last time it was Yoochun, this time it was Junsu. His tongue lingers along Yoochun’s lips waiting for permission which soon opens effortlessly waiting to be explored. Sweet, their kisses were always sweet.
“This ring, I still have the matching pair. I was going to give it to you when you came home, but you never did…”
“I’m home now…”
From his back pocket, Yoochun took out his wallet. The moment he opened it Junsu spotted the photo of the both of them that Yoochun had treasured, in the coin compartment he took out the matching couple ring.
“In that case, this Junsu-ah.”
He slips the ring on Junsu’s ring finger.
“This belongs to you…”
Jinwoo stirs in sleep bursting through his parent’s bubble of happiness. His eyes open and he familiarises himself with the new surroundings.
“Daddy..?”
“I’m here son.”
“Where are we?”
“You know I told you our new adventure was a surprise? Well this is it.”
“Really?!”
“Yeah, you get your own room. It’s filled with lots of teddies already.”
“Lots of teddies?”
“Lots and lots, all for you.” Yoochun added. The room they prepared before Jinwoo was born also remained untouched, with the additional soft toys Yoochun would add every few months.
“Yoochun! You are here too!”
“Yoochun will be living with us as well, how does that sound?”
“Good! I like him.” The young boy smiles.
The instant bond that Jinwoo had with Yoochun was one Junsu was so thankful for.
“You’ll love him, just like I do.” Junsu pinches his son’s nose. “And you’re going to call him Yoochun Appa.”
“Why?”
“Because he is your Appa too.”
“Really? I have two Appas? Yayyy! Yoochun Appa, you’re my Appa as well!”
Yoochun ruffles Jinwoo’s hair.
“I didn’t think he would accept me so easily.”
“He must get it from his Yoochun Appa.”
~~~~~~
Side by side they sat along the sofa; book in hand, continuing from where they last left off. In Jinwoo’s case, a new day, a new little book to get his head in. Every so often his parents would look over his shoulder taking in his every attempt at new words which made them proud.
~~~~~~
Through tired eyes, waving to his smiling parents in the distance, Jinwoo prepares to enter the school grounds for his first day.
School bag in one hand, bento box in another, Junsu watches as his son walks into class. The day he thought would never come was becoming a reality.
~~~~~~
Hand in hand in the park they walk, Yoochun traces the edges of the ring on Junsu’s finger as they watch the happiness in front of them that was of their son with Junsu’s parents. Sun beaming down of them as the bearable wind blows, newly bloomed cherry blossom extending into the distance, the beauty of their surroundings enhances the beauty of this family.
Their happy ending.
Between the gaps was where the truth laid, yet it was left avoided and unread. What was on the surface, the misunderstandings had got in the way, they became the obstacles that obstructed both men from searching between those gaps. It took time, third parties’ involvement for them to finally realise. Between the gaps was where they should be reading, between the gaps were their happily ever after.
