Day 23

Sep 14, 2012 19:51

The protests that started a few days ago seem to be growing across the world, but even though some are happening a 5-10 minute cab ride away, they don't seem to be any closer than they would be from Michigan.  Maybe its that we just get one warning email and then follow international news sources online, just like we would from America.  Maybe it's that the area I live in is sleepy on Friday, or that a lot of people here live with foreigners renting from them, or in their building, or buying from their stores.  Maybe its that there were only 2,000 protesters here in Amman in a city of 2,000,000.

Except that Mike gets stopped in the gym by the trainers asking him to explain what the hell America is thinking, but don't really want to listen so much as they want to feel listened to.

We avoid the embassy, well, actually that whole section of the city.  But its really safety for safety's sake.  Our embassy wasn't evacuated, and no one has even said boo on the streets or even looked at us crossways (staring continues at normal levels and expressions).

But we went to a concert tonight in the Roman Ampitheatre, which is semi-ruinous, and on the way the taxi driver took advantage of his captive audience to lecture us in Fus7a about language aquisition and the awesomeness that is citizenship by birth on American soil.  He''s right, and I first thought that when I learned about many other countries' citizenship laws, but it's the first time anyone, ever, has told me that thought out of the blue.
