Now that so much of medicine in the U.S. is computerized the insurance companies are having a hay day. First they can tell if your doctor is prescribing you a new name brand drug or a generic. In Germany its already happening! family friend of ours needs her galbladder removed, her doctor won't let her do it until she loses at least 30 lbs!!!!

I HATE insurance companies, i really really do. I remember my former one denied the claim from my son's birth because "midwives only do home births and we don't cover home birth"

Uhm.... yet they covered the epidural. Riiiiight.

Being in a family of chemists I know the generic is not the same as the name brand. They say they are but are reverse engineered, and will tend to use lesser quality ingrediants. My mother is on high blood pressure medication, and they keep trying various generics but only the name brand works, without giving her horrid side effects. But each time she gets a new doctor she has to fight and go through the whole things again. Because the new doctor has a new generic for her to try.

Then there is my situation where they keep putting me in the 'normal' range for my meds and the 'normal' range isn't working, I need a higher dose. (And the US 'normal' range is far below what Europe and other countries use).

This is one reason why I don't go to the doctor unless I've broken my wrist or possibly contracted rabies. :P
