Life dump, for me as much as for you.

Much has happened that never seemed quite important enough for announcement all over the internet. Like what? Well, Agnes Nixon went well. One more notch on my directing belt is always good, and it was helpful to get back in a rehearsal room, if only for a little while. The tough thing about theater is, I really love making it. The politics and hand-shaking and smiling are not for me, but put me at a table with a script and some actors and I am in my element. Which leads me to the next Thing That’s Up… I will almost definitely be working at Lookingglass next spring, as an AD or A to the D for Brothers Karamazov. Even what little I saw of a legitimate theater company during the interview process gives me hope for the civility of the real theater world as compared to Northwestern. Needless to say, I am pretty excited about that project. Those Russians put together a mean psycho-symbolic narrative, and it’s always fun to be in a room with people who are better/smarter/older than me. That’s a funny thing about college… some days, I really miss the presence of real-live adults.

Other things? I won a big prize for one of my poems the other day. In addition to being more money than I’m ever likely to see again for my writing, it was nice to stand up and be recognized in a community for work done alone. Next step, Ed Roberson and delight.

Did I mention I’m ADing The Sins of Sor Juana in the winter? That is also an exciting project. I’ll be doing a lot of dramaturgy over the summer, which is new and exciting. The play is disgustingly right up my alley… the tragically heroic tale of a proto-feminist poet-nun, rife with lesbian undertones and questions of identity? I could not make this shit up. There are worse ways to spend a summer than wading through various translations of gorgeous poetry and reading Russian novels.

Other than that, I am working the coffee-house circuit, putting in applications. I panicked after getting turned down from the last of the summer internships and sent out half a dozen more resumes, but I expect this summer to be theater-free except for self-directed research. Which is probably a good thing.

I’ll be home in a week, for a week. Maybe two. We should do things that are awesome.
