Pretend this is off the record, so I can maintain my hardcore cynic and feminist image, ok?
I think dating reality shows are remarkably touching. Every tuesday I stay up til ridiculous o'clock in the morning to watch Tila Tequila, and yeah, partly it's because there are lots of girls making out, but it's also because I think that the notion of a hyped-up, televised search for love is a pretty fair and earnest representation of the process. Dating sort of sucks, and makes you look like a tool. All you can hope for is some good face time. And the impulse to meet strangers in strange places in a search for connection is not so distant from the impulse to get on television and scream out why everyone should want to date you. None of the contestants arrive expecting to fall in love, but I sort of believe they do.
This is poorly conceived and probably wrong. I just want to see Tila end up with the right person, ok?
