Hotaru made her way home... still feeling icky. She returned to the forest the very next day.
"Where have you been, recently? I miss you... you haven't been spending time with me."
"Guess I shouldn't bother with you, today..." Hotaru's crouching in front of a tree. Every once in a while she pokes at it while one gloved finger. "But what did you mean by that... yesterday...
"'Young star.' Did you mean me?"
Glossy-eyed, she stares at the bark of the tree, getting ready to sleep for the winter...
I wonder how Spikeoniisan... and Bethoneesan are doing... maybe they've had the baby by now. she wonders to herself, idly.
I wonder... Hotaru begins another thought... and a branch snaps loudly in the trees behind her.
She stands and whips around, "Who's there!?"
Silence. Nothing comes forward.
But she is still nervous. It was just like that time, the small sounds, followed by a mysterious aggressor. A hand clenches in her coat pocket, ready for anything.
A chill Autumn breeze blows, and she turns back to the tree...
Nothing. With a shrug, Hotaru heads back to her house.
Once at home, she calls her poor neglected schoolmate... "It's about time!" the jab comes, playfully.
A couple of milkshakes later, Hotaru gets home, tired. "I'm home!"
"Welcome home!"
