Show me the bunny.

I've barely had any time to read lately, since I've been moonlighting, but I have had a chance to read a little bit of Reefer Madness. I've read the first twenty or so pages of the section on undocumented immigration. It was interesting to read that migrant labor has made crops that were expected to go obsolete remain viable commodities. It was predicted that crops that couldn't be mechanically cultivated and harvested would disappear from agribusiness by the 1970's. But migrant labor has made them profitable enough to keep up.

There's always mention in the media about the environmental impact of undocumented immigration--the littering along migrant trails and whatnot--but I would guess that if migrant labor has kept a greater variety of crops alive in modern agribusiness, then the net environmental impact of undocumented immigration has been a positive one. Already our agribusiness does a horrible job of promoting any sort of biodiversity. Imagining half a dozen or more supermarket staples removed from our farmlands would paint an even bleaker picture of biodiversity.

I suppose all of those crops, though, would be kept alive by hobbyists, home gardeners, and family farmers. Maybe I don't know what I'm talking about. Maybe it's too late in the day for me to be writing about anything more intellectual than my sudden craving for a bean burrito. I wish it weren't too late to eat a burrito. I guess I'll go dream about one.
