David often finds himself staring down at his own feet when he’s in Villa’s presence. Or sometimes he stares at Villa’s feet, which are now incased in shiny red football boots.

The words were sticky in his throat when David found himself abruptly telling his teammate, “Nice shoes.”
Villa wasn’t oblivious. He gave him a funny look, icy around the edges as if asking just what had David meant by that.
And because David couldn’t even be sure of this, of his own words, he aimed his vision downward again.
