"It's-" the doctor moves the wand around more. Geri's mind is finishing his sentence with horrible, frightening words.
The doctor looks at Cesc. "You're pregnant."
Everything goes black.
When Geri comes to, a nurse is stitching up the cut above his eye and Cesc is still on the examining table, looking at him with wide eyes. Geri waves the nurse away as soon as she's finished and goes over to hold Cesc's hand again.
"Where's the doctor?"
"He said he'll be right back," Cesc mutters.
"How did this happen?"
"The usual way, I guess. They told me nothing was functioning but apparently..."
"So it's-"
"Yours."
Geri starts to get dizzy again so he sits back down, still holding tight to Cesc's hand. The doctor comes in with a gurney and wheels it up next to the exam table.
"Over here," he says. "It'll all be over soon."
Cesc looks from the doctor to the gurney. "What'll be over?"
"We can get you into surgery right now and have it all taken care of today. You won't be out long, a few weeks at the most. Officially you had appendicitis."
"Wait. What happens if I don't have surgery?"
"Well..."
"I mean, would I be able to. You know."
"Carry the fetus to term? I don't see why not, but then again I've never dealt with this kind of thing...you wouldn't be able to give birth, of course, but-"
"But there's room in there, right? My uh. Uterus or whatever-"
"It's normal, yes."
"I want to look at it again." Cesc says. "Now." He looks determined, suddenly, and more than a little angry. Geri loves him when he gets like this. It would probably turn him on if he weren't so completely freaked the fuck out at the moment.
The doctor sits back on his stool and brings the wand back over to Cesc's abdomen. Geri leans forward to look.
"There," the doctor says. He points at a bean-shaped blob on the screen with the tip of his pen. "You're not very far along yet, so there's not much to see. But everything looks normal."
Geri squints and tilts his head.
Cesc bursts into tears.
"We're going to need a few days to talk about this," Geri says.
