Wow this is right up my alley. I made the choice in Jan (actually end of last year but put it into effect in Jan) that this year I would run a 5k.
I started the couch to 5k program and completed it. problem is I'm a slower runner than their program averages, so 30 mins running did not equal the 3.1 miles of a 5k for me so i kept having to push.
I hated every second of it, still hate running. period.
but I finally, just last week, ran the full 5k distance and my first 5k is in Disneyland next weekend! LOL
I'm freaked, excited, nervous, etc. It's not a serious run but it is for me :)

The main tips I have are, don't go too fast. I started off fast and within the 2nd or 3rd week when they upped the running interval my shins were killing me. Which, i found out means you are going too fast of a pace for you. Hence I am slow. :P
Also the hotter it is the shittier your endurance. I kicked ass in the winter months, as soon as summer got here I lost a LOT of ground.
And intervals are your friend. Even the marathon trainers recommend intervals of running/walking.
The one I use is 5 min warm up walk (brisk but not jogging) then 10 mins run, 5 min walk, repeat. then a 5 min cool down walk when you are done.
I'm for sure not an expert but this is what I've been doing to train for my 5k mission :)
Good luck!

Okay I am reading this but then I saw disneyland and I was like "wHOA!" I"m going for my birthday in a few weeks, and have never been in my life! I plan on being a big silly kid all day, anything you suggest I do while I'm there?

LOL yeah I've been a million times and still love it. Looking forward to checking out CarsLand. Even though I wasn't the biggest fan of the movie, the theming looks fun :)
The main tip I have is try not to cram too much into your plans or you will always be running around and stressing about lines being too long and not getting in EVERYTHING.
Toy Story Midway Mania is the most fun ride I've ever been on there. You can get some serious competition going with your ride-mate. Loooooooong lines for it but very, very fun!
Definitely try and check out World Of Color in CA Adventure. It's an amazing show. You have to get fast passes for it since it's limited space. SO my first stop when DCA opens is head for those, they are by the Grizzly River Rapids, chances are good you can just follow the crowds to it :)
Haunted Mansion is my fav ride, I do it as much as I can over and over. It's pure nostalgia for me at this point :)
Indiana Jones is a great ride too if you are ok with being jostled around a lot. If you get carsick, it's def not for you :)
Tower of Terror is fun, heart attack inducing scary, but fun.
Honestly the only ride I will not go on again is the Nemo submarine ride. It's too crammed full of people, slow, and honestly boring. it's a good little kid ride, but not worth the line you have to wait in.
Also get the Disney Parks app for your phone. It has updated wait times for all rides while in the parks, plus menus for all restaurants and snack kiosks. It's pretty helpful for finding nearest bathroom too LOL
Last tip, if you don't care about parades or fireworks then those are the times when the lines are shortest so hit up those big ticket rides. Oh yes and Fast Pass really is your friend! Use it as much as possible.
http://www.mousewait.com/ and this is a great message board to just look at live pics from the parks or ask questions, etc. They have a good app too, I've used it before. Only prob is it eats my battery to nothing!
Have fun!

My biggest problem is that I get really winded really fast, which is funny cause in almost everything else I can keep going and going. Its good to know that i'm not the only one out there that hates running but still just wants to go and do this! How did you do at your 5k? Someone up above also said heart rate is important? My other issue is I have the mentallity of a sprinter, in that I feel like I just need to run fast like right now (which might be why I'm a strong swimmer, you can only go "so fast" before the water works against you and you are forced to go a certain speed...if that makes sense, whereas running you can be like "LET ME GO AS FAST AS I CAN RIGHT NOW!!" you know?)

And congrats to you! You give me a lot of hope and encouragment :)

man I made a long reply to this one too and it vanished I think.
Anyway yeah pacing is very hard. I'm the same, I start too fast then it's all over.
The treadmill helps with this, to get your pacing right and give you a feel for what you should be doing. I would say if you can, start with a treadmill til you get past the "GO FAT NOW!" mode. I don't use a heart rate monitor so I can't speak to it's efficacy but I have heard it's very helpful too.
Another thing I have heard people do, again not tried it myself, is they find music with the same beat as the pace they want to be at and use that for help maintaining the pace.
I know it's $$ but what you may want to do is speak with a trainer, they may be able to help with the pacing and get you started off right.
The main thing is don't push too hard or too fast, you can do serious damage.
And get good shoes. That's the worst thing I've heard people do is just get cheapo shoes and screw up their feet.

Heart rate isn't important, but it can be a very valuable training tool for finding your pace. Most people overdo it, and then they drop running before they've really started.
