cake decorating for beginners

Jul 10, 2011 20:04

i have been wanting to try my hand at cake decorating forever, but i was put off by a lot of the cakes i'd seen - very often it's a mound of icing hiding a cake. i prefer simple, clean and sweet styles. i took my inspiration from 'i am baker' , although i am a bit ashamed to say this. clearly, my cakes do not look anything like hers.

i made these two for my daughter's 6th birthday party, and in the beginning, everything seemed to go wrong: my tried-and-true chocolate sponge cake crumbled apart, the lemon curd threatened to curdle, the chocolate ganache was too liquid, i underestimated the necessary amount of buttercream frosting and had none left to practice, the dots didn't want to be dots, the flowers were stars, and then it was nearly 3am and i just wanted to get done and go to bed.

so while my cakes are far from perfect, i had a lot of fun with them, and i will definitely get some better tips, some more confectioner's sugar and some cardboard and start practicing. the guests loved them, and they tasted delicious!
