My first thought was umeboshi - a type of pickled ume and ume brandy which I adore but have never come across the fresh fruit to even consider making myself. So I googled for you and discovered this website...

You can make o-nigiri (rice balls) with ume, or maki (seaweed-wrapped rice with ume in the middle). Of course if you don't have the ingredients for those, you'll need to go back to the Asian shops to get the ingredients, but every slippery slope has to start somewhere.

I'm pretty sure that ume (the plums one uses to make umeboshi) are poisonous when raw - not sure though, and my internet connection is crappy - but you should google it and make sure!
