An Embarrassing Story

Jun 02, 2007 05:34

I have been cooking - I made easy stuffed mushrooms and even took a picture (with my phone since I couldn't find my real camera) but I can't figure out how to get the things off the phone. I also made berry chicken that turned out tasty, macaroni and cheese (secret family recipe) and the boy and I grilled up a steak with our special marinade. I' ( Read more... )

OOO, thanks! And thanks for reminding me about better quality cocoa powder. I'm definitely interested trying a scratch chocolate cake again.

I admit I usually doctor a cake mix instead of doing it from scratch. Usually I had a half a cup of melted dark chocolate to the batter and the icing.

I think whatever you bring will be a big hit.

Box mix - then doctor it up is very reliable (and easy). Buy an angel food cake mix, add some cocoa powder and for a twist, use cold coffee instead of water when you bake it. Serve with fresh whipped cream and fruit of choice.

Got another idea for same sort of thing but a bit fancier - a rolled cake with filling, but it doesn't stand up well to heat. let me know if you want it.

Just an idea I haven't tried but if you use lemonade in that angel food cake instead of coffee and cocoa, it might be great with the strawberries too (perhaps the kind you have to add sugar too, but leave the sugar out or only use some sugar so it's not too sweet?)

Honestly? I wouldn't bring a CAKE if it's a birthday gathering, unless they asked you to specifically make cake. I suppose there's a chance they're not having one, but I would guess more likely than not they will. I would make cookies, fudge, or some kind of bars without frosting that will provide people an alternative to cake if they don't happen to like cake.

Lemon bars are pretty easy and would be nice and summery, not too heavy. Meringues are also pretty easy, as well. These are just well-rated recipes from allrecipes because I'm a little on the lazy side this morning and don't feel like going through my bookshelf, but it gives you ideas at least.

Exactly what I was thinking - cake isn't right, cookies aren't very show-offy, and I can't think of a bread that says "Eat me with barbeque!" except maybe cornbread. Mmm, lemon bars though, would be just right. Thanks!

I went to a party once where this was... it is REALLY good. I got the recipe from the person who made it and have made it 2 times since then ( ... )

Whoa, Guinness! I'm always a fan of cooking with beer though... thanks a bunch!
