Three-Layer Cake

Hello all you lovely foodies :D

For an end of the year, math project, I am designing and baking a three-layered cake. The layer sizes are as follows: 6x6x3, 7x7x3 and 8x8x3.

My request is this -- I need a cake recipe that is dense and will stand up to being covered in a layer of frosting and fondant (and the other cake layers of course ^_^) and will also stand up to some light traveling. I am thinking of doing a different flavor cake for each layer, so there are really no limitations in that category! The only thing I ask, is for no pre-made mixes be involved in the recipes.
