So the obvious thing to do when the heavens grace you with 33 inches of packed powder (assuming you're not a ski area, of course) is to have a sugar on snow party!
Take:
* lots of fresh, white snow (no, no, not the yellow snow, the white stuff)
* maple syrup. half a cup per person will be sufficient. trust me on this. the darker and sweeter, the better; the grade A fancy is wasted on this application.
* dill pickles
* plain cake donuts
* cider (hot or cold, alcoholic or non, your choice)
* forks
Boil the maple syrup until it reaches just beyond soft ball stage. Let it stop boiling, and place in small receptacles of some sort, one per person (we used mugs, mostly.) Take wide, flat dishes such as pie pans or salad bowls and pack snow in (make sure it's flat). Serve one plate of snow and one cup of boiled syrup per person; let everyone serve themselves pickles, donuts and cider. Now what you do is take the syrup and dribble it over the snow, then use the fork to scoop it up. The syrup cools instantly into a sticky taffy-like substance and, well, it's spectacular. I keep a big bowl of snow within reach to replace the melted stuff.
Yes, folks. I ate half a cup of maple syrup for dinner. And a dill pickle. Winter in New England is occasionally awesome.
(This will, I'm afraid, have to remain food erotica, since I can't find my camera and plus we already ate it all.)
