moth problems

This is not much of a porn-y post, but I have a sneaking suspicion that some of you might have the answer to this question, so I thought I'd ask it anyway.

Recently, there have been a lot of moths flitting about my apartment (which is in graduate student housing, where the old buildings frequently encounter problems like rotted-out wood, termites, mildew, etc).    It doesn't appear that they have gotten into my clothes or my pantry yet, but I am concerned that they will.  Obviously, I don't want to use stinky mothballs.  I've heard of some home remedies, like cedar chips or bay leaf satchets.  What have you found to be effective in decimating these little bastards?  Also, any tips on how to check my grains for infestations?
