a meal at Pangaea

I just got back from visiting Toronto, and while I was there I treated myself to a very fancy lunch at Pangaea. I had sweetbreads, which is something I've been wanting to try for a long time. They were wonderful--tender, rich, and mild-tasting. The sweetbreads were served atop a potato rosti (sort of like a potato pancake) which was itself atop a bed of red cabbage sauted in Riesling with bacon and smoked apples. Seeing the cabbage on the menu almost stopped me from ordering the dish, but it was absolutely delicious--the smoky sweetness was perfect. With the sweetbreads I had a glass of Alsatian pinot gris, which was spicy and very fruity (almost sweet, but the sweetness worked with the dish). After that I was pretty full, but the dessert choices were too tempting to be resisted. So I had the Autumn Trio, three perfect little miniature delights. There was a fig tart, a pumpkin ice cream cake topped with a gorgeous crunchy cinnamon-sugar, and a pear trifle.

I've never spent that much money on a single meal in my life. And it was worth every penny.

Sorry for the lack of pictures, but I thought you folks might enjoy the description anyway!
