AU with Boaty McBoatface?

I saw that the British public was voting on a name for the Natural Environment Research Council's new polar ship, and so far, the RSS Boaty McBoatface is winning. I can't stop imagining a Modern AU fanfic in which, for some reason, Bush, Hornblower, and Kennedy have to inspect the newly commissioned ship and we get their diverse reactions (Archie ( Read more... )

Have been thinking about this since last night. I might have a go. Really it is not a lot sillier than some of the actual ship names of the day. (The pickle and the flirt for example.)

And my own headcanon is that WB has a silly sense of humour that he suppresses with vigor. Horatio often has trouble knowing where the joke is-- and Archie never suppresses being silly.

My thoughts precisely! The RN really doesn't have a leg to stand on when it comes to giving ships ridiculous names XD Flirt is one of my favourites but there was an HMS Fairy too :) I'm sure I wrote a post about stupid ship names years ago, prompted by the fabulous idea of Mr Bush yelling in his best quarterdeck voice "FLIRTS TO ME!"

Mike was much alarmed by the Inconstant. He said that was a terrible name for a Naval ship! Of course sailors have long had their own names for ships. Like the "Billy Ruffian.'

I know the Navy here has dirty or silly names for a lot of the ships. Yellowstone was "Yellow Bone" for instance. And the Saratoga was "Sorry Sarah." The Forrestal was always "Forest Fire," because it caught on fire.
