George Cadogan and the fangirls = Anteros and Nodbear's conference news !

Jan 10, 2012 16:23

A little announcement on behalf of anteros_lmc and myself which has had the pair of us in great excitement most of the morning (and even caused the odd giant SQUEE)

We have heard that one of our abstracts proposing a paper/presentation to be given at the Society of Nautical Researchers' conference at Glasgow in March of this year has been accepted.

We are especially pleased because there has been a large number of good submissions, according to the markers and made selection quite difficult, and so as first timers we are fortunate to get an opportunity. We know from looking at previous conference reports that many of the participants are studying for MA or PhD degrees at universities with Maritime studies departments so we feel that this is a big step for fangirls everywhere - two fangirls let loose among the serious scholars:) yikes

We are going to tell George Cadogan'story or at least part of it starting from the day that Lord Spencer wrote to Edward Pellew to ask him to take on the young son of a friend in the Indefatigable but concentrating on his three court martials and what they tell us.

George has rather endeared himself to both of us since we began researching all the young gentlemen of the Indy in 1797 and we are very excited to be presenting on him.

We will post on our journal pages updates about getting ready for this event and how we eventually get on but hope our shipmates will cross their fingers for us = it feels somewhat taking ones lieutenants exam in the presence of Black Charlie Hammond et al

Heres hoping we don't end up flat aback and on a lee shore approaching Dover...
