With Advantages
“It is just as big as I recalled.”
“Yes,” said Horatio.
Archie's face was hesitant, his smile
flickering. Horatio reached out, touched his cheek, to steady it.
Archie brought his own up, to hold it, warm there.
“I thought, it must have been
smaller, that I had remembered with advantages.” Archie's voice
faltered a little. “I thought of it so often you know.”
“Me too.”
“That day, when you brought me
here.”
And Archie did not say that he had kept
the memory of that day apart. He had held it jealously close, as he
suffered in his chains. It had sustained him in thirst, and cold, and
agony. He had held to it, until Spain where for a time he had lost
all belief.
He did not need to say this. Horatio
and he were here. It was just as it had been, the green arched the
pond, and he could hear the plunk of frogs, and the drone of the
jeweled dragonflies. He could feel the soft dampness, in his mouth as
he breathed it. It was like a kiss.
“Don't just stand there,” Horatio
said. “Take your clothes off.”
