Debate Demonstrates Mississippi PROGRESS

Thank God! I am SO PROUD of my town and state after this weekend! Things kicked off Thursday night, when Thacker Mountain Radio broadcasted from the Square, and EVERYONE was all over town rubber-necking. I SWEAR TO GOD I saw John Goodman (dedicated Republican, lives in New Orleans--it makes sense!) walk by the restaurant we were in. I stopped talking, blinked several times, and had the urge to run outside and see. But I am not an invasive person, and felt that would be rude. But I don't think I hallucinated it. Anyway, there was all sorts of promotional swag to be had. And there was a Red Bull bus! You go on, get your complimentary Red Bull, booty dance with the other people on the bus for a minute, and then leave.

We ran into several people we know outside.

So Friday was the debate. I was at work all morning until my Dad got to town around 1:00. Honestly, not a lot of work was happening. We all just wanted a Home Base on the Square and a place from whence to rubberneck. Dad arrived, we had lunch, and went to the Grove, where Issue Alley and Rock the Debate were happening.

I have no clue what this is supposed to mean. It makes ABSOLUTELY NO SENSE to me! Does anyone know anything about this?

I think this guy was with whatever cause that weird van represented--but he disappeared before I could ask him what it was about. Way to advocate, guy!

This wind energy display was created by friends of my friend Seth, and Sarah hosted them at her home. They said they LOVED Mississippi and they are all from California/D.C. Wonderful!

At the Grove, we saw all sorts of stuff. And the big trend was to bring your dog and deck it out! There was a giant schnauzer with McCain stuff on, but I didn't get a picture. I did, however, catch this tiny Travis Childers supporter.

Let it never be said that Mississippi lacks a sense of humor.

Here's the Rock the Debate stage. They were unaware of our pre-dancing, three-drink minimum, I think. ;)

MSNBC had a big tent and look! Oh my God, Chris Matthews!!!!

Of course, some ol' boy showed up with a Rebel flag and was trying to wave it around on camera. I LOVE this next picture because there are signs from all over the political spectrum, united against the redneck. They faced him and put the signs up higher than his flag, blocking him from the cameras until he gave up and left. No longer is that incendiary, divisive, hateful nonsense politely tolerated out of a sense of "tradition." When the video-camera guy showed up, the crowd was yelling, "Go back to 1962!!!" YES!!! Even as recently as 2000, when I was a freshman at Ole Miss, maybe one or two people would have said something to that guy. If asked by the media, the rest would have made some pathetic excuse as to why they personally tolerated him. NO MORE.

Dad and I headed back to the Square. My favorite thing there was Obama-land, set up outside Goolsby's Barber Shop.

This was where you could get the "I Have a Dream"/Fulfilling the Dream Obama stuff with glitter writing and buttons that said, "Hot Women Vote for Obama." There was no such set-up for McCain other than his campaign tent in the Grove.

The debate was projected on big screens at the Grove and on the Square. We watched from the Square. I thought Obama did a wonderful job. I only wish he had pointed out that, experience or no, when the goal of foreign relations is to heal broken relationships, the LAST person you want in those talks is the rash-decision-making, hot-headed bully. Honestly, McCain is the biggest DRAMA QUEEN. But look at Obama up there! He was less than a mile away from me!

This event was a smashing success. AND THEN WE BEAT FLORIDA AT FLORIDA. Best weekend in Oxford history.
