Chapter 3: stars
Rose Tyler had grown accustomed to heart breaking images.
The Dalek in Utah, the look of pain on The Doctor's face when he'd lost the TARDIS, the diseased people on New Earth.
And yet, nothing seemed more heartbreaking than the TARDIS on emergency power. Her darkened form reminded Rose of a coma patient.
"Hey beautiful" Rose said, as she stroked the TARDIS'S console.
The small monitor sprang to life showing an image of the doctor.
"Is this thing working?" he asked as he tapped against the lens of the camera. "Alright, Rose, here's a list of instructions for when I'm human. One, don't let me hurt anyone. We can't have that, but you know what humans are like… Two, don't worry about the TARDIS. I'll put her on emergency power, so they can't detect her. Just let her hideaway… Four, no…Three…No getting involved in big historical events… Four, very important…Four. You. Don't let me abandon you…"
She smiled.
"And Five. Even more important, well, almost… Five, don't let me eat pears. I hate pears! John Smith is a character I made up, but I won't know that. I'll think I am him, and he might do something stupid like eat a pear. Now, in three months, I don't want to wake up from being human with that taste in my mouth."
Her smile grew into a grin. He was such a child sometimes, her Doctor.

As she walked across the grass back to the school, she gazed up at the stars and felt a stab of impatience.
Two more months 'till it's back to the stars, she thought to herself, two more months 'till you're back where you belong.
And yet,
In a strange way, the inhabitant of his body had grown on her.
She wasn't in love with him like she was with the Doctor,
(Not by a long shot)
But she knew that she would be sad to see this sweet, gentle, intelligent person, go.
Perhaps she should give him an unforgettable send off before he does.

It was much later that night when Rose, on her way back from their 'Magic Blue Box- the TARDIS, was halted by strange noises. She had taken John Smith's 'Journal of Impossible Things' into the sentient ship, so she could keep it safe. Not to mention that she still needed some comfort from what she had seen in the interaction between the Doctor's human self and the Matron.
Just now, Rose had been on her way back when she heard a sound she'd recognize anywhere.
The sound of the Doctor, screaming.
Ever since Downing St., she'd known that the Doctor had bad dreams.
Usually they were about the Time War and his people.
Though, lately…
Something else haunted his dreams.
Something he refused to talk about.
Every time she woke him from such visions, he'd crush her against him and pepper her whole body with kisses, rather than tell her of these horrors.
An avoidance tactic she'd had no objections to.
Rose rushed towards the door, and knocked. Maybe that would be enough to wake him? No such luck. Steeling herself for the reprimands that would surely come as soon as John Smith was awake, she entered the darkened room. Not bothering to be quiet- she wanted to wake him, after all- she made her way over to his bed, and gripping him by the shoulders, lightly shook him.
His eyes fluttered open.
"Are you alright?" she asked, worried.
"R-rose?" he queried back with a wondrous tone. "What are you doing here?"
"Just be glad I am. Are you alright?"
NO, he thought to himself, I am not alright, in fact I'm the very opposite of 'alright'.
Right now he just felt so vulnerable,
Like a single word could shatter him.
"I was so alone." he murmured, "I had just witnessed you being swallowed by the mouth of hell.
"But it spared my life, Leaving me to suffer alone."
Rose shivered as she remembered the events of Canary Wharf.
She had been so close to falling into the void.
If the Doctor hadn't thrown himself after her, slowing her down just long enough for the void to close...
She didn't want to think about it.
"I'm here now." She assured him.
He instantly relaxed. Something about her voice soothed him.
He felt her arms wrap around him and leaned in, savoring the contact.
He let out a small whimper when she pulled away.
"Please don't leave me." John begged, "I can't be alone right now."
She took his hands in hers and smiled so beatifically that his hearts (heart) ached.
"Close your eyes and come with me."

John Smith felt the soft grass under his still bare feet.
A tug on his arm made him sit down.
He opened his eyes. They were right out in front of the school.
"When I have trouble sleeping, I look at the stars and imagine what sort of adventures I'd have if I could reach them." This was true, Rose thought to herself. Until she met The Doctor, she always considered her daydreams nothing more than daft fantasies.
Now it seemed as though there was nothing she couldn't reach.
"Seems like lonely work." The teacher teased, "Touching the stars on your own."
"Then why don't you come with me?"
"Don't mind if do."
The night air was filled with laughter as the two of them made up stories about The Doctor and his golden companion.
But if Rose Tyler had turned around,
Maybe, just maybe she would have noticed the green flash in the sky.

Neither talked as they stood in front his door.
John guessed that this was what they meant by deafening silence.
“Well, you should get some sleep." She broke the silence.
"Um indeed I will. Sleep well, Rose Tyler."
She turned to leave when he grabbed by the arm.
"Wait," he brought her closer to him, and pressed his lips firmly against hers.
The kiss was nothing more than a soft pressure at first but when she did not flinch, or move away, he opened his lips a bit to deepen the kiss. Rose followed his example with a moan, and soon his tongue had slipped into her warm orifice. His hands encircled her upper arms, and pulled her into his body. When her delicate, cloth-covered flesh touched his lean frame, she groaned and bit his lip passionately.
Eventually their infernal need for oxygen won out.
"I better go." And she turned to leave once more,
This time without him stopping her.
"Thanks for the stars Rose." He whispered as he entered his room.
Good luck getting to sleep now.
