On
towelroad.com I found a video of Madonna's first live performance at NY's
Danceteria, singing Everybody, as 'Madonna' from Sire records. This song was on her first self-titled album. I first heard Madonna at my aunt Susan's house in my cousin Melissa's room. Now, if you know Mel, you know she's always hip and ahead of her time, so it's no surprise that she knew about Madonna before my 10-year-old-gayling self did. She was listening to 'Borderline' and my young mind knew immediately I was listening to my Future. I have seen early performances of Madonna at the Danceteria with her band the Breakfast Club, but that was before she signed on with Sire.
Did you like Madonna as a kid (or adult)? I know my Mom had no choice since I listened to Madonna so much. I still have my first 'Like a Virgin' record somewhere, with everything written in Spanish b/c my Mexican aunt Carolina gave it to me for my 12th birthday. Aaaahhh....it's heart-warming to know even my family unwittingly contributed to my lightness in the loafers.
My brother Eric tells me that he knew I listened to much to Madonna when he found himself unconsciously humming to a Madonna song.
