the suggestion for today's journal, for those with writers' block, mentions that today is the anniversary of the russian revolution. i haven't bothered to look that up, but i'm sure it's accurate. what bothers me is they've quoted karl marx (not as funny as harpo) as having said, "religion is the opium of the people" when i've always heard that quote as "the opiate of the masses." I definitely prefer the opiate/masses version more, probably due to the fact that in modern english we're more apt to say "the people's opium" than "opium of the people," whereas the masses are allowed to have things "of" them without an issue. Then again, i'm probably just being puerile anyway, as karl marx definitely didn't make the original statement in english, and "opium of the people" is just as valid a translation (i suppose) as "opiate of the masses." Unless, of course, you think connotation has any importance in language.
Of course, most of my aggravation is probably due to the guy who tailgated me for three or four miles on the way to the restaurant tonight. I've discovered i'm much more okay with people who tailgate on the highway than i am in areas where there are such things as stop signs, traffic lights, and pedestrians. Speaking of pedestrians, I had a woman (walking her two large dogs across the street) yell and wave at me to slow down. Apparently she was concerned that I was going to hit her dogs, despite the fact that I came to a complete stop 20 yards away from where she was crossing the street (which, incidentally, was right after a curve in the road and about 30 yards from the crosswalk which, go figure, was placed at a safe distance from the blind curve). Call me crazy, but I'm pretty sure my car isn't going to suddenly break free of the roadway and score two first downs on its way to running over Pampered White Lady any time soon. Her Pampered White Lady friend seemed to be taking my side of the conversation, though, 'cause I definitely saw signs of "hey calm down" and a heated discussion on the sidewalk as I drove by. Thanks, Lady.
So last friday we made an offer on the house, and this wednesday we should get a response. Anyway that's what the seller told the lender's negotiator who told our realtor. It'd be nice, but mainly I just want to know when I can schedule the inspections and such, 'cause if it gets too much closer to the wedding we're all going to go crazy.
Well, I have to go help Sarah with Guitar Hero: World Tour. Wish me luck.
