Last Sunday Mogwai played in San Francisco, and I decided I would try to go. It looked like I might get as many as three people to come with me, but it turned out that none of them could make it. I really like seeing shows with friends, but not having to coordinate rides or meeting up is very nice, too. So I drove to SF and found a parking spot on the street just a block from the venue. I'd decided not to bring my bulky purse, so I had some cash in my pocket, and my license and a credit card. Unfortunately tickets at the door were cash only, and cost $26. I had $24.25 and no ATM card, so I was unable to see a band I've been wanting to see for a long time all for the lack of a dollar seventy-five. So tragic, no? At least I hadn't paid for parking.
I pulled a decent evening out of it, though, by stopping in on a college friend and her not-boyfriend. We drank wine and watched music videos until late/early, when I made my way home.
On Wednesday night I went up to Yoshi's SF to see Sex Mob and Happy Apple. I'd won tickets from the Stanford radio station. I really didn't care for Happy Apple, but I wouldn't say they're bad. Just not my prefered style of jazz. I ran into a former co-worker at the show who was there to see HA, and he mentioned that the drummer was the drummer for The Bad Plus, which I like much better. He didn't stay for Sex Mob, though. I'm not sure if it was because he didn't care for the music, or if it was because his date was unhappy (or maybe both). The Sex Mob set was really enjoyable for me, though.
The next show I'm excited about is Richard Thompson playing the Rio in Santa Cruz.
