Volume 4, Chapter 17 - “Cold Wars”
I had really been looking forward to this episode ever since Jack Coleman said something briefly about it in his blog. While I did enjoy the episode, I was a little disappointed because I was expecting something as awesomely amazing as Company Man, which it has been somewhat compared to in promotional stuff leading up to the episode. But, like I said, it was still good.
First off though, there are a couple of things I meant to post about in previous episode reports that I blanked out on. Or maybe there’s just one? I forgot to mention a couple episodes back that when Gabriel/Sylar was having his hostage/torture situation with Luke, Luke’s mom, and Agent Daniel whatever his last name is, it looked to me like he used Eric Doyle’s power to shut Luke’s mom’s mouth. Now, I don’t think that Gabriel/Sylar killed Doyle, so if that was his power and not the telekinesis, then he must have gotten it through empathy? I figure that he probably could have gained understanding of the power through having to break out of it when Doyle tried to take control of him, or, and hopefully not, I guess maybe he could understand Doyle because of Doyle’s feeling for Meredith being similar to how he fells about Elle, with Doyle’s line of “she’s mine to love… mine to kill” ?
Another thing on the subject of Gabriel/Sylar, maybe: In some sources (TV Guide, I think, and the CBR Behind the Eclipse) they noted that Swooizie Kurtz is going to be a guest start sometime during this season. Now, Virginia Gray was played by the actress who on Pushing Daisies played Chuck’s Aunt, and so I’m thinking, wouldn’t it be interesting if Swoozie Kurtz is going to be Gabriel’s real mother?
Oh, also, I maintain that Gabriel was meant to be a Petrelli. His power is so close to that of Arthur and Peter, and the storylines of last season definitely seemed to be pointing in that direction. I really think that the writers changed their minds about that due to their not being able to secure Kristen Bell for definitely being a part of future volumes and thus not being able to continue with the storyline of their relationship and her being pregnant with baby Noah. So, with those stories crossed off, they needed something else interesting for Gabriel/Sylar to do this volume, and so they came up with the he’s not a Petrelli, he needs to search for his birth parents and team up with Luke idea.
Back to episode 17: As I said in last week’s report, the kidnapping of Mr. Bennet was pretty cool - especially in that the way they did it was so much like the way Matt was abducted by Mr. Bennet and the Haitian. It seemed kind of funny to me that Mohinder was the one checking Mr. Bennet’s vital stats and so forth, using the stethoscope and all, when Peter is the nurse and Mohinder has - or he used to anyway - repeatedly tell people that he was not a medical doctor. But, I guess that since working for Primatech and Pinehurst Mohinder’s opinion on his ability to do doctorly things has changed. It is good to see Mohinder getting his stronger morals back as demonstrated by his thinking that drugging Mr. Bennet was a bad idea. I mean, it doesn’t change how messed up he was last volume, but Mohinder’s being the representation of good morals on the show was something that I liked and it’s good to see that that hasn’t been totally lost - and that Mohinder also knows that how he was acting in the previous volume wasn’t right.
Aron Coleite and Joe Pokaski pretty much confirmed that Angela and Mr. Bennet were working together against Nathan’s group in a recent Behind the Eclipse. Someone wrote in asking about that and they gave one of their “you’ll see” answers or something like that, giving the feeling that the person was definitely on target. But it was interesting seeing their teaming up, once again going with a “one of us, one of them” duo system. I didn’t realize that Primatech had things set up like normal businesses do with pensions and what not, and the gift of a watch after a certain number of years of service. Somehow that’s amusing to me. That the two of them meet at that park bench is also quite amusing. Primatech is so not over though, I mean, just because their building in New York burnt down does not mean that all the other buildings they’ve got around the world were also destroyed, or that the whole thing totally disbanded after that. I understand that the New York building was the central headquarters for them, but they’ve still got the place in Odessa, TX, and Odessa in the Ukraine, plus there’s apparently one in Chicago (so says the webisodes in the Heroes: Destiny storyline). There have to be others, I would imagine.
I got the feeling like Mr. Bennet had been doing a hell of a lot of crossword puzzles during his time off after Primatech burnt down. He really should have gotten another hobby though, instead of going to work for Nathan’s group. Though I understand he wanted to protect Claire from being captured by the Hunter, though I still don’t get why Nathan would even allow it to be a possibility that Claire would get captured. Unless he wasn’t actually going to allow her to be captured and was just making Mr. Bennet think that he was in order to force him to come on board. Nathan’s plans of rounding people with powers up until he can find a cure for them is so bizarre. It would be nice if Nathan could come to his senses again, as he has been able to do for very temporary periods of this show.
So, did Mr. Bennet have some kind of a truck or something lug out all those weapons and files he has in that storage place from Odessa to Costa Verde? Or was that place actually still in Odessa and Nathan flew them there?
Loved that Mr. Bennet told the Hunter about how the “one of us, one of them” plan is great and that some people with powers could be of use to them. Stupid Hunter thinking that “twelve of us, none of them” is a good plan. I really don’t care about the Hunter. He seems even less developed than Arthur. At least with Arthur he had connections to his family and the twelve, and though he was a crappy villain (that is, not complex or complicated, just evil), at least his connections resulted in interesting stories. With the Hunter, I’ve got no idea where he’s coming from.
Didn’t expect that Mr. Bennet had tried to get Mohinder to help him and had warned Mohinder about the plan of Nathan’s to round everyone up. Though, I can’t blame Mohinder for not believing him. They do have trust issues after all.
I don’t like Mohinder and Matt fighting. And, it doesn’t seem good that Matt broke a mirror during the fight. That paired with his having become a prophet, and the fact that there hasn’t been a romantic relationship on this show to survive beyond the season in which it was introduced (besides the Bennets), doesn’t bode well for Matt’s survival. Hopefully I’m wrong about that though. I want Matt to stick around. I’m also worried for Peter though, for a number of reasons which I’m not getting into now. And I’m worried about Mohinder. But moreso about Peter, and Matt.
I quite enjoyed Mr. Bennet’s smile to the Hunter when he said, “you don’t know anything about me.” I hope that’s made into icons somewhere.
Glad that Peter didn’t kill the Hunter. I really don’t want Peter to become a killer. And with Nathan’s sudden appearance, there we have another bit of evidence for the Hunter and his team to discover he has a power too.
I was a little surprised that Daphne survived thanks to the gossip I read from E! which said otherwise - though previous gossip from E! said that she would survive and that there was a cover-up at work. So, I’m trusting the first gossip columnist. It’s good that Matt knows that she’s alive now too, though I somehow think the rescue mission isn’t going to go well.
I wonder if Mohinder’s being held captive by Nathan is yet another thing leading up to the future from the first volume coming true. Since, in that future Mohinder was working for “Nathan” on coming up with a cure for people with powers, and it does seem like that’s probably what Nathan wants him to do in the present.
I liked that Mr. Bennet and Angela met up again at that park bench near the end of the episode. I don’t really know why them meeting there and not looking at one another while they talk is so amusing to me.
Why did Peter and Matt decide to go to Issac’s loft of all places? Wouldn’t they think that that would be under surveillance too? Although, it might be a case of going to a place that would seem too much expected and therefore isn’t being watched and isn’t a place where people would look. And so now it seems like Matt’s going to try to blow up DC? What would the point of that be exactly? I guess we’ll find out.
