Okay, I just watched LOST "Happily Ever After" and.....that was bloody fantastic.
I really didn't think anythng could top Ab Aeterno from a couple of weeks ago, but that just maybe did it. And I loved Ab Aeterno.
First indication that this was something special was that it was a Desmond episode. Desmond episodes are always good. Then I saw Dominic Monaghan in the opening credits. Charlie and Desmond? heck yeah good times ahead.
Now on the plane in the alternate timeline Charlie nearly died and in tonight's episode he said what he saw. He said he saw the woman he loved and he knew he loved her and that they were together somewhere. Obviously this was Claire, which was sweet beyond belief, but it means something bigger. He saw into the original timeline. And then one car ride into the harbour later, so does Desmond. When Charlie looked at Desmond under the water on the other side of the window I thought "hey, that's kinda cool, it's like when Charlie died and-WHAT THE?!" because then it flashed up with the actual moment of Charlie's death on screen and his hand with the writing on "NOT PENNY'S BOAT". Desmond is of course like WTF and goes in search of this mysterious Penny.
And if the icon hasn't already told you this, if there's one thing that's gonna tug my heartstrings more that Charlie and Claire, it's Penny and Desmond.
However there are a few interesting differences and things in the way. In this alternate universe Desmond works for Charles Widmore, he has his respect and approval and is now "worthy" in Widmore's eyes. Why Desmond has worked for this man for so long and apparently never met his family is beyond me, but I'm gonna let that slide. So Desmond goes to talk to Eloise Hawking (now Widmore in this universe, along with her son Daniel who is not a scientist but a musician now in a fancy hat) who seems to know exactly what Desmond is looking for because she tells him to back off. Does she know about the different timelines? How? Why? She also makes a point of saying to Desmond that in his life right now he has exactly what he wanted, Widmore's approval. I swear that woman is either a Time Lord or a Witch. Or a Time Witch. Either way she's all weird and stuff.
So Desmond meets Penny again for the first time (??????) and then decides it's his mission to show the original timeline to the other passengers of flight 815. Holy crud this is gonna be good.
And back on the Island Desmond has been placed in some kind of EMP chamber by Widmore who says he needs Desmond's talents to help save them all. I'm guessing Desmond saw the alternate timeline when he was out and whilst before he was all "grr" at Widmore and tried to beat him with an I.V (which I think is perfectly fair when the guy once tried to shoot Martha Jones) now he's all like "hey yeah awesome let's do this thing brotha" (not in those exact words of course). Of course then Darth Sayid turns up, kills some nameless extras and tells Desmond to coem with him, and Des is once again all "hey yeah, sure, I'm cool with that". WHAT? Did the EMP scramble his brain? What the heck is wrong with Desmond? Okay like I'm gonna get the answer anytime soon, but still.
However something Charlie says is making me think. When he saw Claire in the original timeline, he said he saw the "truth". So this alternate world is a lie, or at least wrong. There is a theme of people getting the thing they want most. the Man In Black told Sayid that he could bring Nadia back to life, and here Eloise said that Widmore's approval was the thing Desmond wanted most. But things are still wrong. Sun and Jin are together but not married in this universe, and Sun got shot and probably lost their baby. Things just aren't right. This could mean that the events of the original timeline have to happen and anything else is going to lead to disaster. Or that this alternate timeline is nothing more than a dream world. I'm somewhat reminded of Life on Mars here, but that might just be because I've been watching Ashes to Ashes (also great this week btw). If Jack fixes everything in either universe by jumping off a building I'm gonna be pissed.
Also interesting was that Penny's surname in the alternate universe seemed to be "Milton" and of course John Milton wrote "Paradise Lost".
Oh LOST, how you confuse and entertain me so.
Peace out brotha.
