So I know it's been way too long since I last posted, but life has been crazy (I'll have to save that for another post!). I thought in this update I'd talk a little about the weather......
Where to even start......it seems that I've had a lot of weather wishes over the last 6-8 months. The first wish was that winter would loosen it's hold on us (it thought about it, but decided not to). The second wish was for winter to go away (along with all the snow it brought).....it took a while, but finally the snow melted. The third wish was for spring (which finally came, I think) and now....now I wish for the rain to go away.
I think I'm about ready to grow webbed fingers and toes with the vast amount of rain we've received over the last 3 weeks. The Iowa river, which runs through the center of town, was already higher due to all the snow that had melted. Well, all the rain in the area hasn't helped.
Last week they evacuated a dorm as they were to increase the flow rate from the the local resivor, unfortunately they've had to continue to increase the flow rate in an attempt to prevent the water from cresting over into the spillway (if it does flooding will be severe). Now it seems inevitable that the Iowa River will soon be leaving it's banks. They continue to increase the flow rate, and in doing so the urgency of sandbagging has increased.
Currently the biggest concern is for lowing lieing areas, this includes part of the University, as the Iowa River runs right through campus. The good news is that we should be fine as we don't live near the river (this is assuming their's not some weird water table underneath us!). I'll try and keep things updated, and maybe even post a few pictures later in the week!
If you're interested in following the rivers progress here's a link to the Universities blog, which has all sorts of fun links!
