A while back my father and I went to see The Golden Compass. I thought that overall it was very well made, but that there were several ways in which it kind of killed the book. The most obvious is that (spoiler warning) Roger dies in the end of the book. However, in the movie, the ending is treacly and shows the two children looking happy and hopeful. Also, Iorek is a great character, but he was seriously overdone in the movie. We don't need him roaring every five minutes, thank you very much. However, I felt the casting was perfect. I never thought of Ian McKellen for the bear, but it worked. Nicole Kidman was the most perfect though. I was happy that that though the church references were taken out, the gist remained. I recommend the movie, but you should read the book, because it is far better.
