Gold moans as he brushes his hair from the bump on his head, painful from being hit by Old Lady Kimberly’s staff. He knows it is his fault for being his brash self, being so much more brash than usual, but this was the way he was dealing with Silver, with Silver and the older Pokedex Owners turned to stone. It doesn’t hurt that his brashness makes Crystal laugh or cringe or sigh because of him and not because of the loss of their senpai.

“All we can do is train,” Crystal says to him while inspecting the bump, “and wait. Wait for the time Jirachi awakens. Wait for Emerald to catch Jirachi while doing the Battle Frontier.”

“I know,” Gold says. “I just can’t wait for it.” I don’t like seeing Silver like this, stone and unfeeling, something I used to think he was but he isn’t.

“I know,” Crys said softly. “We just have to do our part, Gold. Train, then help the younger ones when it’s time.” She cracked a smile. “I can’t believe this time you’re going to have to be the responsible older one.”

“I can be responsible,” he jokes, brushing back his hair to hide the bump. “I stopped Pryce’s plan, didn’t I?”

“I’m not sure making up plans off the top of your head is ‘being responsible’,” she quips as she sets out some food for their Pokemon.

“Well, you’re stuck with me, whether I’m responsible or not” said Gold cheerfully, attempting to keep his mind off the pain from his head. “We’ll have to make sure we don’t die and get back the others.”

Crystal gave him a sad smile. “I know.”

“Ne, Crys” said Gold suddenly, deciding that he had beaten around the bush with Crystal enough, that it was as good a time as any to ask her though he wondered how much the pain in his head was influencing his decision. “When we have some free time and you know, our training is going well, can we go somewhere together?”

As expected, she asks where.

“I don’t know, a movie, something, maybe dinner-“ Gold fears that his cockiness has disappeared with the sudden increase in throbbing of the lump of his head as he accidentally clips the bump on a lamp. He moans.

The next thing he knows, Crystal has forced open his mouth and has dropped a pill - a painkiller, probably- in, then a glass of water is emptied down his throat. He swallows reflexively and he is guided to his bed.

“Gold, you’re obviously in pain to say something like that” she said wryly. “Lie down and sleep,” she said. “I’ll wake you tomorrow for training.”

“Fine,” he said huffily, head clearing enough to realize that he may have just been rejected. He didn’t want to dwell on that.

A few minutes later, her voice is a whisper when she draws a blanket over his body. “And if you still remember what you asked when we’ve gotten back our senpai, then yes.”

He grins as he relaxes, the pain in his head subsiding. He could wait for that, if she could. And when the waiting was over…

“Gold, wipe that perverted grin on your face and go to sleep!”

Well, he still had his imagination for now.
