Don't say what, and don't say pardon.

I'm pretty sure most of my friends wouldn't do this but just in case you haven't given it thought...

When someone tells you they have hearing difficulties, saying "What?" straight afterwards is incredibly rude and hurtful - like pretending to be blind at someone with vision impairment, or exaggeratedly limping at a leg amputee.

It's incredibly common ( Read more... )

I sympathise entirely, it's a really shit thing to do to people. I'm sorry you're having to deal with not only the shittiness factor of your condition, but people being absolute jerkwads about it.

Also? 'You're too young to have (that condition)'. FFFFFFFFF-

=^..^=

Most people are very decent about it, but the jerkwads have a way of sticking in the mind. Especially the ones who seem to think that you are faking/deliberately choosing to have it just to make their day slightly harder. ARGH.

Thanks, hun, and right back atcha.

So I was contemplating wedding presents and now you've given me the perfect suggestion: some brass knuckles to assist in punching stupid people. Sorted.

Knuckle dusters are the perfect gift!
(I am particularly taken by these - http://www.designyourway.net/diverse/officegadgets/knuckle_duster_mug.jpg - coffee AND a knuckle duster! Something for every occasion.)

I guess I shouldn't be surprised that people actually do that, but I would think-no, I'm not surprised that people actually do that. Augh.

People can be dicks without meaning to be dicks, and then get offended when you point out they are being a dick. It's a spectacularly shite talent we have.

No, no, no - info is great, as I am struggling through this alone a bit and could well be missing stuff. I hadn't even considered the flash-buzzer things existing but yes, now you say it, I realise they are probably out there. I'll have a look ( ... )

I know there is Australian Hearing, also (this may sound a strange option) Costco actually have a hearing centre. You have to be a member, but it could be worthwhile. Also, speak to your Dr. The Dr's do sometimes have some good ideas.

I'm not eligible for assistance from Australian Hearing (under 26, over 65, veterans and a few other small groups, but nothing for adults who can hold down a job basically) but Costco is one option I'm looking at.

I'm going to head to the doc this weekend and will ask her too.
