Who: Cadie & Kurt
When: Feb 8
Where: The Lima Bean
What: coffee makes the world go around
When Cadie had gotten Kurt’s text about getting coffee, he had thought hard for a minute, then had put his music away, going to get coffee. After all, it was coffe and it was Kurt and they hadn’t hung out much recently with Kurt having glee now and him working and such. Cadie wasn’t sure what to think about glee actually, he had auditioned as a musician, but he wasn’t sure that musicians even auditioned. Could he be a part of the group and not sing? He wasn’t sure. He wasn’t sure if they knew either. Regardless though, he and Kurt needed to hang out and since neither of them were much into video games, coffee was the next best thing.
Arriving, he headed inside, folding his tall, lanky frame into an upholstered seat. *Hey.*
Kurt walked into the Lima Bean and his smile widened as he saw his friend sitting there, waiting for him. “Hey!” he answered, almost skipping to him to give him a friendly hug. He looked around the room quickly once to see who was there, and just generally to feel the atmosphere. Then he looked back at Cadie. “Sure!” He hurried to order a cup of coffee for each of them. He knew Cades usual coffee order. He sat down in front of him after handing him his cup of coffee. He warmed his glove clad hands around his own cup. “It has been way too long, hasn´t it?” since they last hung out together and just talked, face to face.
*Not since the rectal probing,* Cadie agreed with a grin. He knew that phrasing (and the talk thereof) annoyed Kurt to no end. It was why he thought it was hysterical. He was grateful when Kurt ordered his drink for him, which was useful. That was the annoying thing about not being able to talk, ordering things, people often thought that he was stupid or deaf or whatever and talked past him. This just saved steps. *Keeping busy?*
Kurt’s cheeks flushed at the memory and he reached over to smack Cadie’s arm. “Stop it!” he grinned. He took a quick glance around the room... once in a while he forgot that very few other people could understand Cadie. He was glad that Cadie let the topic drop. He leaned back in his seat and crossed his legs. “I’m being kept busy, you could say... and I keep myself even busier to avoid the first ´busy`.” He sighed.
And what did that mean? Cadie took a sip of his coffee and regarded Kurt seriously for a moment, *Want to elaborate further?* he asked, raising an eyebrow. *Boy problems?*
Kurt hesitated. He took another sip of the steaming cappuccino. “It´s a problem with a boy, but it has nothing to do with my love life,” he wanted to make that perfectly clear, “It´s complicated, to put it mildly... There is this guy at school. He has been tormenting me and the rest of the glee club for a while. All of a sudden he apologised and I tried to be nice to him. That didn´t end well.” he rolled his eyes at the thought. “When I tried to cheer him up, he started yelling at me and told me to delete his number. The morning after he greeted me with a morning slushie.” and he was actually worried that it would get worse. He put down the cup and his hands fell into his lap instead.
That did not sound good. At all. Cadie didn’t get slushied and whatnot, but then, he ran under most peoples radars since he didn’t speak. He didn’t call attention to himself. Kurt, simply by existing, tended to get noticed. It was useful sometimes, but not when it came to slushies. *I think you should leave him alone,* Cadie finally replied, thinking about it, *And maybe tell someone. Especially if you don’t feel safe.*
“Oh, I´m leaving him alone. Trust me! I´m trying to avoid him as much as possible.” Kurt quickly said, his eyes wide. “I´m telling you right now... not that I want you to take him on or something like that... unless you´ve been taking ninja-lessons since last time.” he joked. “I never feel safe in that place.. nothing has changed much in that department... do you know how much the grand total is for the wardrobe they have ruined and continue to ruin everyday?” Kurt’s own safety equals the safety of his Marc Jacobs and friends.
*More than the national deficit?* Cadie joked, but he understood what Kurt was saying, *You know you can always hide behind me. I’m not great protection, but I can glare menacingly. Or sign rapidly,* Cadie was not a fighter. Neither of them were. He was at least tall.
“Probably!”Kurt laughed a bit. He smiled at Cadie. He already felt better. Almost as if he was at home with him, in Cadie’s man-cave. “That sounds like a tactic! You confuse him with signs, and I run away to hide in the girl´s bathroom!”
Laughing, Cadie tried to picture that, *Wait...once he realizes that you’re gone, he’ll pummel me!* he protested, still laughing, *I can’t damage these hands!*
“And I can´t damage this pretty face!” Kurt gestured towards it. “Do you know how much work it is to keep it that way? It will be such a waste to me and the world in general!” He was, of course, joking. He would sacrifice his face for Cade’s hands any day. They were important to both of them.
*You’re also 14, it can be fixed,* Cadie pointed out, his signs easy and fluid. *You’re still pretty,* he paused a moment, *Don’t let me forget to take my car into your dad on Friday,* Burt Hummel had not only taught Cadie to drive, but had helped get him the SUV that he drove now and was teaching him basic car maintenance. His own father, though well meaning, was rather useless when it came to automobiles.
Kurt smiled at Cadie’s compliment. He winked at him. “Well thank you, gentleman,” he faked a British accent. “I won´t let you forget. How else are you supposed to ever drive me anywhere?” Kurt wasn´t quite old enough to drive yet. He only helped his dad out in the garage and he had a feeling his dad would buy him a truck for his birthday. He had heard his dad talk to someone about it in the garage one day, while he was helping an elderly lady fix a flat tire. “I think my dad has been missing you lately, he´s trying to pull me out to the garage to teach me things more often than before. He´s even been trying to re-teach me tricks I already know!”
Kurt in the garage always amused Cadie. The younger teen was quite proficient when it came to automotive work, helping his father, but it was completely incongruous with the image he otherwise presented. It made Burt so happy though to have his son work alongside him. He liked it when Cadie came and helped out, though it wasn’t that often since Cadie frequently had to go to Dayton for his music. That was part of why he had a SUV, he needed to be able to carry his instruments and something very safe for the drive. *I’ll come by then, I promise. He can even feed me if he dares,* Cadie grinned. Kurt had learned to cook from his mother since Burt wasn’t the most adept in the kitchen. Of course, Cadie ate just about anything.
Kurt laughed. “Don´t say stuff like that! You´re just going to get yourself sick.” He was very much aware that his dad was a horrible cook. Kurt had started eating flowers in the garden sometimes when he was a kid after his mom died, since that meant his dad had to cook. Kurt lost a lot of weight back then as well, and it wasn´t just because of the sorrow. He was probably lucky that he didn´t get sick himself. “But maybe I´ll cook something for you if you´re lucky. Maybe that can lure you home to visit me more often. Apart from just that my room smells better than your man-cave most of the time.”
Cadie shrugged, *You know what I like,* his father only knew how to make pot-brownies so really, it was a good thing that is mother could cook. Cadie had a soft spot for pasta, especially lasagna, and Kurt made a fantastic one. *Anyways, my room smells fine! You just don’t appreciate the earthiness of patchouli and sandalwood.* And possibly laundry.
“Oh I appreciate patchouli in some perfumes” Kurt smiled teasingly at him. “But I prefer the company of Chanel´s classic sophistication.” There was a part of him that felt at home in the relaxed atmosphere of Cadie’s home, though, and he cared very deeply for that family, even though they were so different from himself. “But I do feel rather uncomfortable at the thought of being in the same room as the nude bodies of ladies printed on magazine pages.”
*Think of it as ‘artistic appreciation’* Cadie retorted. He didn’t have completely naked women in his room, nor very large posters, but he had no reason to hide his porn from his parents. They were very open about well...everything. They weren’t nudists or anything like that, but their 16 year old son having porn was nothing they got upset about. *Just like Michaelangelo’s David. I don’t go wrinkle my nose at it.*
“I have a feeling Mr. Michaelangelo viewed David in a slightly different way than you view the nice ladies, Cade,” Kurt was blushing a bit, now that he remembered that they were in a public setting. He lowered his voice a bit. “As did his audience.” He did wrinkle his nose at the thought. The thought of a naked woman was in no way appealing to Kurt. He did like the thought of the handsome statue, though.
Cadie shrugged. That was probably true. *I am a 16 year old heterosexual male. I like the ladies,* he had no problems admitting this and more. While Cadie was inexperienced in the ways of physical love, he was not ignorant or ashamed of making love and what it entailed. His parents believed in open, honest communication. There was very little that wasn’t discussed openly or frankly. *The man can make good statues, not gonna lie. Even if they’re not my type.*
In Kurt´s home, it was very different. Kurt could not remember that his dad had ever spoken to him about love. Not even the purely emotional kind, between a man and a woman, or a man and a man. Being gay had probably never even been mentioned. “Yes, he did..” Kurt´s eyes turned down towards the empty cup in his hand. He smiled at Cadie after a moment of silence. “So, is there.. any special lady?” he asked.
Cadie made a face. A special lady? Really? He shrugged, noncommittal, *Not really. Don’t know any ladies who’re interested in a guy who can’t talk,* all jokes aside about guys never arguing with women or being wrong or whatever, high school wasn’t the friendliest to guys who weren’t the norm. *There’re a few who I think are cute.*
Kurt smiled at the face Cadie made. “You´re a charming guy, Cadie!” and he really meant it even though he just couldn´t see Cadie as anything but a best friend or a family member. “You´re just.. very special. And I like that. I´m sure I´m not the only one. If they´re not willing to get to know you, they´re the ones who´re missing out.” Maybe Kurt was a bit too serious on this topic compared to Cade. But love was a big topic in Kurt´s world these days. His crush on Finn was mind-consuming.
Really, Kurt and Cadie were a lot more like brothers than they were friends. Kurt was an only child and while Cadie had an older brother and sister, both were grown and married with children of their own. Cadie had been a surprise addition when his siblings were in high school. *You know, I think I’m supposed to be upset that I’m not dating, but I’m really not,* Cadie explained, *I’m really happy with my music and what I’m doing with the CYS. I’ve met this one girl though, a Cheerio. She plays the flute too. She’s pretty cool,* definitely not your standard Cheerio in some wasys, *but she’s dating Finn Hudson, I think. What about you? Any boys?*
“Oh yes,” Kurt sighed. He leaned his head in his hands. ”I´m a bit confused about my feelings though, but he´s so strong and handsome and...he saved me.” He was talking about the very same Finn Hudson who was dating Cadie’s own crush. “He´s the nicest football player, and the only one who wouldn´t lock me in a port-a-potty and push it down a hill.”
Cadie wasn’t sure if that quite qualified him as good enough for Kurt, mostly because putting people in port-a-potties and pushing them down a hill was a really dick move. *Football player?* Cadie asked, making sure he had heard correctly. *You like that guy with the insane long red hair?* he wasn’t up with all the football players, but he had heard that that one was gay. It was funny since Cadie had long hair too, but his barely grazed his shoulders. The other guy had hair practically to his waist! Somehow, he couldn’t see Kurt with that guy.
Kurt looked up at Cadie and blinked confusedly as the mental image of Finn with long red hair crossed his mind. “No!” he straightened up. “No, he´s NOT my type!” Kurt liked his guys with short hair. Masculine guys who were big and strong enough to hold him and take care of him. Not that he couldn´t take care of himself, of course, but it felt nice. “If you promise not to laugh or say anything to anyone, I´ll tell you!” he actually really, really wanted to tell someone. Anyone. Ok, maybe not ANYONE.
*I promise! Who would I tell, anyways?* Cadie pointed with a look. Granted, there was nothing to stop him from writing it or posting it on facebook or whatever, but he wouldn’t do that. That wasn’t his style and Kurt was his best friend and brother from another mother, you didn’t do that to family.
Kurt took a deep breath and couldn´t help but smile widely and excitedly. “It´s Finn.” He sighed, his cheeks turning pink. “He´s been nothing but nice to me, and he stopped Puckerman from beating me up... it was love at first sight.” He got all giddy at the memory
Finn? Finn Hudson? Really? *Are you serious?* Cadie was appalled and regarded Kurt as if he had grown a second head, and an ugly one that that, *You can do better than that neanderthal! First of all, he barely has two brain cells to rub together! And secondly, falling for a guy just because he acts decent towards you puts yourself down. No. You can do better.*
“For some reason I find his... mental slowness charming,” Kurt wasn´t even sure why himself. “He is on the football team. Does better even exist in our high school world? He´s practically royalty,” not that status was the most important thing in Kurt´s world, but like most teenagers, he was dreaming about the day his life would turn into the story from a teenage movie.
Cadie shook his head, making a clucking noise with his tongue. *Whatever floats your boat, dude,* he replied. Kurt had always had a romantic streak a mile long. *I gotta go to work. You want a ride home or something?*
Kurt let Cadie change the subject. He would never understand. Cadie wasn´t gay afterall, and he was probably never madly in love the way Kurt was. “That would be great. I don´t want to sit around here like some sad type who´s got nothing better to do until my dad picks me up. As a matter of fact, I do have better things to do! I could rearrange my shoe collection. This morning I actually forgot who designed my deep red leather boots.” He looked astonished at the thought.
Oh, Kurt. *Never change, dude,* Cadie replied, fishing his keys out of his pocket and going to throw his cup away.
