Movies, corrupting the youth.

I don't think I really understand the NC-17 film rating.

The only NC-17 movie I think I've ever watched is Requiem for a Dream.  It's technically unrated.  They took it to the MPAA board and got an NC-17, were told to take out the scene with Marion at the end in order to get it down to an R, and refused.  Apparently it's better to not have your movie rated at all than have the stigma of NC-17.

And after watching This Film is Not Yet Rated (a documentary about the MPAA), I still don't get what NC-17 is supposed to be.  It used to be X?  I thought X was porn?  Requiem for a Dream isn't porn.  So what is X then?

Also, as someone who is basically a virgin at life, Hostel was rated R and I was actually offended by that movie, whereas I really liked Requiem for a Dream.

I think when (if) I have kids I'm just going to watch movies ahead of time and decide what's good or not good for them, instead of listening to some secret board of parents and priests.  Because I think something rated NC-17 for sex is a lot more "appropriate" than some of the violent garbage that gets rated R, or even PG-13.  The sad thing is that the ratings actually affect the success of a movie.
