Summary: It isn’t distance that separates a relationship. It is silence.
[1] Everything felt surreal the moment Yeosang met Mingi.
When he was asked if he accepted Song Mingi as his husband, Yeosang felt something running down his spine, forgetting that he was supposed to respond. He looked at Mingi nervously.
Mingi mouthed to him that it was alright. The way the taller male gazed at him in such intense feeling-like he really cared about him-gave Yeosang the mental support he needed. With a deep breath, he managed to let out an audible whisper.
I do.
Yeosang also forgot the part that Mingi was allowed to kiss him after putting the ring on his finger. He became panicked for a second, but again, the way Mingi stared at him-like he was asking for permission to kiss him-made his heart clench.
He nodded.
Yeosang didn’t expect his first kiss would taste so sweet.
The way Mingi pressed their lips together was so…gentle. There was a hint of disappointment in Mingi’s orbs when it ended, but soon was replaced with joy.
Something churned in Yeosang’s stomach, nearly suffocating him. He didn’t understand what it was.
Just like he said, Seonghwa was really nowhere to be found when the ceremony ended. Yeosang felt a bit sad, but he understood that he belonged to Mingi now. It was only natural that his brother wasn’t around anymore to help him.
That night, Yeosang was brought into a big house. It wasn’t even the right term to describe the place, the house was practically a mansion. Mingi’s house was twice bigger than his house.
The black-haired male wordlessly stared at the huge building the moment he got out of the car. The place felt foreign and there was no Seonghwa, but he needed to accept the fact that he was going to live there from now on. Yeosang felt Mingi reaching out to him, squeezing their fingers together.
Mingi gave him a comforting smile. “Don’t worry. This is your home now, Yeosang.”
It turned out that Mingi’s parents weren’t in South Korea right now. Mingi had insisted on marrying Yeosang right on his birthday, but his parents already had an event to attend that day. Not that it mattered anyway, Mingi just needed the bride to show up to make the wedding happened because they didn’t invite any guest.
“My parents aren’t here right now, but that doesn’t mean they have anything against you. There’s a time difference, so they’re probably still asleep, so we’ll just call them tomorrow. Also, I have an older brother, but he’s traveling a lot too, so we have the house to ourselves.”
Yeosang didn’t understand rich people, why buy a house this big if you weren’t even going to live in it? Also, he didn’t know why he recalled Seonghwa’s kick his groin he’ll stay away over and over again. A house this big with no one else around? So, would no one hear him if he screamed?
Wait, why would you scream?
“So, Yeosang,” Mingi cleared his throat, pulling Yeosang back to earth. “Is there anything you want to ask? I mean…for the past two years, we’ve never met even once. Aren’t you curious about me?”
Yeosang didn’t know how to react properly to that. Sure, he was curious, but he never really pondered what Mingi looked like. He definitely wouldn’t have guessed Mingi was this attractive. The male was practically shining.
“Are you tired? Maybe we should call it a night. We can talk more tomorrow. Now that we’re married, we’ve got all the time in the world.”
Mingi said it so casually that Yeosang was the one who felt embarrassed. It seemed like their confidence was on a whole different level. But it just seemed so…Mingi. Unlike him, Mingi didn’t seem to have any trouble saying what was on his mind.
Mingi acted like a tour guide as they headed to the second floor.
“Powder room, family room, kitchen, living room, and this…is our bedroom.”
Yeosang was amazed at how big the bedroom was, it was enough for eight people-if crammed together-at least. A king-sized bed was placed against the wall, and there was a giant couch, a giant table, and a giant television in the middle of the room. Mingi went to the walk-in closet-which looked just as big as the bedroom-and went back with two pair of pajamas.
Yeosang merely stared at the proffered item.
“Don’t worry, they’re new,” Mingi grinned. “They’re a gift from my brother. It’s couple pajamas, by the way. Isn’t it nice we already have couple items on the first day we become a couple? No? Is…that supposed to be a glare? Uh… So, the bathroom is over there, if you need to take a shower before bed.”
Take a shower before…what?
Yeosang glanced around the room, his eyes resting on the huge bed. The male pressed his lips into a thin line, looking very nervous, and Mingi quickly noticed what he was uncomfortable with.
“Don’t worry,” Mingi patted Yeosang’s head for the umpteenth time that day. “I’m not gonna do anything without your consent. You can take the bed. I’ll be sleeping on the couch in the meantime.”
Wait-
Yeosang wanted to stutter that no, it should’ve been him who slept on the couch, but Mingi already walked away, his attention was fixed on something on his phone. He swallowed nervously before deciding that he would take a shower.
He locked the bathroom, just in case.
***
Mingi really did sleep on the couch all night long.
Yeosang couldn’t sleep.
How could he, when Mingi was just a few meters away from him? He had a feeling the taller male was a man of his words, but he couldn’t help being…cautious. Alert. Discreet. Mingi didn’t seem to fall asleep right away too, the male had his headphones on, it seemed like he was watching something on his phone and didn’t want to disturb Yeosang.
When he woke up, Mingi was already up, too.
Mingi then gave Yeosang several new notebooks and a brand-new smartphone.
Yeosang was taken aback.
“I thought you’d prefer to write what you want to say if you don’t feel like speaking to me. But then again, it’s easier to chat nowadays.”
Mingi took his place beside Yeosang closely, too close, that their shoulders were pressed against each other.
Yeosang found himself swallowing at the touch, perhaps it was the rest of his breakfast. It was a bit strange having someone other than Seonghwa being so close to him.
“This is the application you use,” Mingi explained patiently. “This is your number-our number is identical, by the way. This is your profile. Try uploading a picture later for profile. This is mine. You click this icon here to start chatting me up. Let me show you.”
I love you, was what Mingi had typed and sent.
Yeosang nearly choked.
Mingi’s phone chimed immediately and showed it to Yeosang.
Song Yeosang, was what Mingi had saved his name as.
Yeosang didn’t understand why his heart started beating fast upon seeing it. He could feel the blush creeping up to his ears. But Mingi was acting so casually that he, too, pretended that nothing was out of place.
He was too nervous that he didn’t even wonder how Mingi could say those words so casually to him.
“You can also use stickers. Just click download…done. Oh, and these are emojis.” Mingi continued explaining about the yellow application. “What else will you be using…oh, this camera app. You can use various filters. And that reminds me, we should take a picture together. You know, to celebrate?”
P-picture? Yeosang’s jaw dropped.
Mingi had already opened the camera app on his phone, showing both of their faces.
Yeosang visibly stiffened.
It had been a long time, too long since he had a picture taken.
Yeosang could see he looked awkward as heck in the screen and shook his head disapprovingly, but Mingi already pulled him closer.
“Should I set the timer?” Mingi was oblivious as he took a moment to tidy his bangs, then Yeosang’s bangs, before staring at himself back on the screen. “Are you ready? One, two-”
W-wait, Yeosang almost cried. He instinctively covered the screen with the palm of his hand, ignoring the sound of the camera clicking.
“Eh? Why?”
Yeosang kept on shaking his head. Mingi wouldn’t understand. The other male was so good-looking that he didn’t think he’d be decent to take a picture with him.
“Ah, has it been a while since you take a picture? In that case, don’t worry,” Mingi caressed Yeosang’s cheek with a thumb. “You’re beautiful, I swear.”
It seemed like Mingi did a lot of things that made Yeosang unable to react properly. But Mingi looked so serious about it that he didn’t have the heart to say no. In the end, Yeosang gave in, letting Mingi snapped a picture of them. The taller male then took a few more before looking at the results in the gallery.
Honestly, Yeosang wanted to hide his face because he looked so, so awkward. The way Mingi smiled brightened the world, his pretty eyes turning into crescents every time he did. Compared to Yeosang, Mingi was just so…
Handsome.
Yeosang waited if Mingi was going to make some funny remarks about how he looked-oh my God, I totally look like a freaking rock-but nothing came out. If anything, Mingi’s expression changed drastically, like he was about to cry.
Wait, why are you-
“Ah, I’m okay, just feeling…grateful for this moment. I’m glad you’re finally mine,” Mingi said softly, turning his face towards Yeosang. “You’re so beautiful, Yeosang.”
Mingi caressed Yeosang’s cheek once again.
“You’re so beautiful.”

They finally did a video call with Mingi’s parents.
Upon seeing them, Yeosang knew where Mingi got his good genes from.
Mingi’s parents welcomed him into the family, saying they loved him already, even if they weren’t there to witness the ceremony. The video call ended with his mother-in-law winking when she said they would be back before Mingi’s birthday, and they should use the opportunity to crawl all over the house before they got back.
Mingi coughed violently into his hand as he disconnected the call.
Yeosang didn’t really mind staying home-he was so used to it-but Mingi seemed bored to death. The taller male spent the past days playing games, swimming, watching sports, eating. On repeat. Sometimes he would groan and lie on the couch, lost on what else to do. Yeosang felt bad, but he didn’t know how he should cheer him up. He wasn’t a fun person to begin with.
Compared to Seonghwa, Mingi talked a lot, like really a lot. His random comments while watching television or the loud voices he made when playing games was actually amusing to watch. Yeosang found himself smiling a lot watching Mingi.
It was nice to have someone beside him like this.
Yeosang would probably be lonely if Mingi ever had to go back to work.
Mingi had just returned from his morning jog when Yeosang was doodling. He couldn’t help but notice the size of Mingi’s arms because the latter was wearing a sleeveless shirt. His skin looked so radiant even when he was sweating bullets. And the way he gulped the water down his throat-
What the hell is wrong with me, Yeosang forced himself to focus back on his drawing. He saw Mingi heading towards him, and he put on a smile. When Mingi was only a couple steps away, Yeosang took his phone and typed something before pressing send.
Shouldn’t you be working?
Mingi paused, glancing at the real person who sent it, before pouting as he typed a reply. I’m a newlywed, you know. I deserve to take some time off. Besides, aren’t you going to be lonely if I’m not around?
I’m used to it. Besides, you’re one to talk. Isn’t this house too big?
Wdym?
Yeosang blinked.
“What do you mean,” Mingi threw himself beside Yeosang. He smelled like sunshine and sweats, but Yeosang was surprisingly alright with it. “Sorry.”
Oh. Aren’t you lonely too? When your parents and brother aren’t home?
Hmm… Not really. I usually go to work or hang out with my friends. I only go home to sleep.
I see…
“Actually, if you feel like the house is too big, we can always move into a smaller place.” Mingi scratched his neck sheepishly. “I’ve had my eyes on an apartment downtown. It seems fun, just the two of us after marriage. But I don’t want to make a decision without asking you first. I understand, our situation is different. I don’t want you to freak out. Maybe later when you’re comfortable sharing the bed with me, we could…probably do it?”
Yeosang’s expression made Mingi panic.
“I mean, do it, like living together, not-not the one you’re thinking about.” Mingi growled as he abruptly stood up. “I’m too sticky, I should go take a shower.”
Yeosang palmed his face with his hands. He was honestly baffled. Mingi had been nothing but kind to him. He didn’t seem resentful towards the marriage. If anything, it seemed like Mingi was already accepting him as his spouse. The way he was being considerate of Yeosang’s feelings made him feel…
…loved.
The pretty male scrolled up back to the start of their chat.
I love you.
He wondered if Mingi did really mean those words.
***
Another week went by, and Mingi was still sleeping on the couch.
Yeosang honestly felt awful about it, but he was still awkward about sharing the same bed. Mingi still being very accepting about it made him feel worse. Yeosang once talked to Mingi that they should switch places to sleep once in a few days, but of course he got scolded.
Mingi was being super talkative to him, but Yeosang still preferred chatting instead. Again, Mingi being so understanding-like Seonghwa-was just so sweet, but lately it had come to his attention that it was a different kind of feeling.
Something very strange apparently kept on making appearance within him every time Mingi was close. He felt butterflies everywhere every time Mingi laid his eyes on him.
“Ah, I have to go back to work tomorrow,” Mingi pouted. “If you ever feel lonely, feel free to message me, okay? If you ever miss this handsome face, feel free to facetime, okay?”
Yeosang snorted into a smile as he continued drawing.
“I’m serious, Yeosang,” Mingi beseeched cutely said as he scooted closer. “You know you’ll miss me. By the way, you’re really good at this.”
Not really, Yeosang mouthed, trying not to notice their knees bumping. But thank you.
Mingi chose a random drawing. “Can you play skateboard?”
No, Yeosang wrote beside the skateboard. Just curious.
“I see. Well, it’s cool, I can see why you’re interested,” Mingi shrugged. “I think I’ve seen people playing in the park. Would you be interested in watching random people falling and jumping over skateboards?”
Yeosang was about to laugh, but Mingi’s expression made him halt.
“Would you…be willing to go out with me?”
There was definitely something wrong with his heart rate-they seemed irregular.
Or was it always like this when it came to Mingi?
Yeosang was mesmerized, there was actually a mole underneath Mingi’s right eye. Their eyes were locked, and he could tell that there was unspoken hope within those beautiful black orbs. If he could, he’d just lock himself forever in the house, but it didn’t seem to be an option anymore.
Mingi was beside him now.
And going places with Mingi just seemed…acceptable.
Yeosang nodded.
“It’s a date!” Mingi grinned widely, flashing a row of white teeth. “We’ll go this Saturday then. You’d better get ready!”
***
Yeosang was used to being alone, but when Mingi started going back to work, it hit differently.
He was kind of used to the other male’s presence and how loud it became whenever he was around.
It was always Mingi who initiated the text. Yeosang just didn’t know what to say, it must’ve been due to his lack of social skills. He also didn’t understand why Mingi liked to video call him when he couldn’t utter a single word back to him-not that Mingi minded though, the taller male just seemed content of seeing his face.
It felt like forever when Saturday finally arrived.
Yeosang was in the walk-in closet, staring at his own reflection.
Mingi was in the study room, he had to finish something work-related that morning. On a damn Saturday morning, he recalled the taller male grunting. But what could he do, since he was only-Yeosang wasn’t sure if he heard it right-an errand boy in the company.
Mingi.
That name caused a lot of commotion within him lately.
Yeosang examined his own clothes, not sure if he looked appealing or appalling. He had always liked wearing his jeans a bit high on the waist. Would Mingi find it funny? He didn’t know that choosing what to wear was this hard. Now he understood why Seonghwa took a lot of time to dress. But his brother had always looked beautiful no matter what he wore, he was always the stylish one between them two.
Yeosang sighed. He knew he could never compare himself to Seonghwa. They were both different persons and had different styles.
In the end, he decided he would just go with what he liked, at least it wasn’t blinding in color and he was comfortable with it. He was brushing his hair, still in front of the mirror when all of a sudden, Mingi came barging into the walk-in closet, yanking his shirt off.
Yeosang found himself gulping, not knowing if Mingi did it on purpose or not, but the view was so thrilling that he couldn’t avert his eyes from the other male.
Mingi had his back facing him as he browsed through his clothes, and Yeosang took the opportunity to observe from the mirror.
He had always thought he had broad shoulders as a male, but Mingi’s was even broader. He looked so gorgeous like a model-the male must’ve had a large fanbase somewhere, girls and boys swooning over him, screaming his name dramatically as he walked by. With his feature, Mingi must’ve been super popular in school. His arms looked pretty muscly and his back looked so…
…huggable.
Yeosang choked at his brain’s choice of word, suddenly feeling ashamed at himself.
Mingi finally took something and put on another shirt, a black one before turning around and locked their eyes together in the mirror. “Spilled my coffee,” he said, even though he owed Yeosang no explanation.
Yeosang could only nod.
Damn.
Mingi looked so handsome in black.
***
It seemed like Mingi had already prepared a long list of places to visit, because the first destination was the movie.
Yeosang was awestruck.
It really had been a long time since he went out with anyone-the last memories he had was with Seonghwa and his father, dinner in a hotel somewhere. Since it was the weekend, the place seemed to be more crowded than usual.
Yeosang chose to wait for Mingi in a secluded corner, away from people. He noticed Mingi had his glasses on when he showed up with a large tub of popcorn and two bottles of drink. “Not sure what you prefer, I hope you’re okay that I chose a mix of caramel and salty flavor. Could you please hold these for me?”
Mingi handed the bottles to Yeosang. He carelessly popped a handful of popcorn into his mouth before taking out two ticket stubs from his pocket. There were traces of popcorn on the corner of his lips. Seeing Mingi was too oblivious to notice, Yeosang automatically extended his free hand to wipe the former’s lips-his other hand was holding the drinks.
Mingi smiled meaningfully behind his glasses. “Thanks, babe.”
Yeosang froze.
He didn’t know if he froze because Mingi was calling him babe, or because glasses weren’t supposed to be this hot.
He chose to shrug it off.
The movie was nearly three hours long.
Yeosang didn’t realize that Mingi was so invested in the movie. The taller male couldn’t stop complaining when the movie ended, that he was actually disappointed. The online reviews that he had been reading made him have high expectation, but the ending wasn’t to his liking. Yeosang didn’t really understand, so he just listened and nodded to the heartful complaints.
Mingi was talking too much that Yeosang didn’t think he even listened anymore, just subconsciously watching Mingi’s lips moving.
The second destination was a restaurant.
Because of lunch time, the place was packed, but fortunately, Mingi had made a reservation.
Yeosang let Mingi did all the choosing and ordering. He had never been picky about food, and he believed whatever Mingi chose was delicious. It didn’t take long for their food to arrive, and both dug in immediately.
The couple beside them was being a bit too loud. Yeosang carefully sneaked a glance at them. Instead of finding it annoying, he felt envious. He felt like it was a normal thing to do for couples-or even friends-to share a laugh, a full conversation, even a playful argument.
He wondered if he was going to be able to do it one day, and if Mingi was patient enough to wait until it happened.
“Yeosang,” Mingi suddenly said, nudging his foot under the table. “How’s your food? Is it delicious?”
Yeosang nudged back, earning a laugh from the handsome male across him. He merely gave him a thumb up.
“Then let me try.” Mingi opened his mouth and pointed at himself, shamelessly asking to be fed.
Yeosang’s hand was slightly trembling. He was lucky he didn’t drop the food as he fed the taller male.
Mingi’s grin was too bright to his liking. “It’s good.” The male must’ve noticed his feelings about the couple because he suddenly squeezed Yeosang’s arm. “We’re also good, you know.”
Yeosang’s heart fluttered at the gesture he got. It was as if Mingi saying there was no rule that said they had to be like every other couple.
The last destination was the park, as Mingi promised.
Today’s date made Yeosang realize that going out to public places wasn’t actually that bad. Even though there was a lot of people around, Yeosang wasn’t…terrified anymore. Aside from the fact people seem to mind their own business, unlike the situation he faced at school, it was probably because Mingi was beside him. Everything the taller male did make him felt special, like he really paid attention to him.
Mingi really did pay attention to him.
Just like now.
They were walking side by side when all of a sudden, Mingi pulled Yeosang close. His hand was placed on the latter’s hip, beckoning him to move forward first. The way Mingi held him close made Yeosang feel safe, making his heart pounded loudly. Yeosang was too lost in his own thoughts that when the path suddenly became crowded, he didn’t pay attention and almost stumbled forward.
Mingi caught him right on time.
“Are you alright?” Mingi’s face was so close to him that Yeosang could feel his breath. The taller of the two pulled him aside so they wouldn’t block other people’s way. “There are way too many people on weekends. If it’s too much for you, we can just go back.”
Again, Yeosang felt his heart pounding. Mingi always seemed to be able to find the right words to say. With the sea of people around him, the thought of his cozy room, a comfortable couch and his favorite notebook were very tempting. But he had survived the first two places, so why not try this one too?
Yeosang shook his head as he looked for Mingi’s hand. The smile Mingi gave him was infatuating. He leaned into the taller male as they walked together in a pace, heading to the skateboarding spot.
For the rest of their date, they just stood there watching people coming and going. Their arms were linked together the whole time. No words were said, but they both knew the bond they shared had deepened.
Yeosang treasured their first date so much.
