“Yifan, can I have my ear pierced...?”
They were at a cafe when it happened.
Yifan stared at Junmyeon like he had just said something awful. Unconsciously, he raised his hand to pinch Junmyeon’s cheek and the latter let out a weak yelp. Junmyeon placed a hand on his pinched cheek and glared at Yifan.
“Wh-what was that for?”
“Just a friendly reminder that you’re not allowed to ask something that you already know what the answer is going to be,” Yifan calmly replied and caressed his boyfriend’s cheek as an apology. Junmyeon merely pouted in return. Yifan tried to ignore the sadness that glinted in Junmyeon’s black orbs and continued to read the magazine on his lap.
But Junmyeon didn’t give up that easily.
“Jongdae just got his ear pierced last week...”
Yifan hummed.
“And Yixing went with him...”
Yifan flipped a page.
“They picked the earrings together...”
Yifan faked a cough.
“Yifan, please listen to me,” Junmyeon whined as he tugged on his boyfriend’s sleeve, asking for attention.
“No, Junmyeon,” Yifan replied firmly with his eyes still fixed on the magazine. “No, you’re not going to have your ear pierced. And that is final.”
Junmyeon stared at Yifan with a hurtful look, one that Yifan honestly couldn’t stand. Ignoring it, Yifan casually flipped another page of the magazine, acting like he didn’t care. The Chinese male wished that Junmyeon understood the argument ended there, but his boyfriend was being a bit stubborn that day.
“You’re not fair,” Junmyeon said with a shaking voice.
“No, you’re not fair,” Yifan groaned and gave up reading. He put the magazine away. “Don’t use that tone on me.”
“I never really ask for anything, you know,” Junmyeon said defensively. Yifan mentally kicked himself when he saw tears were threatening to spill over Junmyeon’s eyes. “I always obey what you want me to do...”
Yifan gave Junmyeon a look. “This and that are different, Junmyeon.”
“Still, a boyfriend needs to listen to what his boyfriend wants. And I don’t know if you notice, but I always, always listen to what you want...”
“What did you mean with ‘if I notice?’ Are we going to fight over this? Because this is useless, Junmyeon. The answer’s still going to be no.”
Junmyeon looked like he was about to burst into tears any moment, but he was still stubborn about his opinion. It surprised Yifan slightly, because he had never seen Junmyeon acting like this before. Something must have happened-or someone must have affected him. It could be Jongdae. Or Yixing. Or Jongdae and Yixing.
“I wish I dated-“
Junmyeon abruptly covered his mouth before he managed to finish his sentence. Yifan’s expression hardened at the unfinished statement and he gritted his teeth in dislike. Regret was instantly chiseled all over Junmyeon’s face.
“I’m sorry,” Junmyeon whispered in fear and dropped his gaze to his intertwined fingers. “I’m sorry, Yifan...”
Yifan bit back a harsh retort, and did a great job of composing himself. He managed to stay calm, because he knew that Junmyeon didn’t really mean it-that those words just accidentally slipped out of his mouth. Yifan understood that Junmyeon was obviously disappointed, but if the fair-skinned male was going to fight for his opinion, then so was he.
“What happened?” Yifan’s tone indicated that he demanded an answer. “Why do you suddenly want a piercing?”
Junmyeon reluctantly brought his hand to his mouth. He looked somewhat embarrassed-and cute, too. Yifan held himself at the sudden urge to hug Junmyeon and kiss him right then. That could wait, Yifan absently thought as he poked Junmyeon’s cheek.
“Babe.”
“...couple earrings...”
“Hm?” Yifan frowned.
“I-I thought it would be cute if we have couple earrings...” Junmyeon said quietly. His eyes weren’t directed to Yifan when he said those words, so he missed the way the taller male gaping in disbelief. “Yifan... I’m jealous...”
“Jealous of what?”
“Of you and Zitao,” Junmyeon bashfully scratched his nose. “You guys have the same earrings... I mean, I know we have couple rings too, but...earrings are like...special. And when Yixing and Jongdae did, I just... I think I want it too...”
“Babe,” Yifan sighed in exasperation. “You know you’re special.” He ruffled Junmyeon’s hair affectionately, liking the way his boyfriend fluttered his eyes at the simple gesture. “God, you should see how beautiful you are right now. Now just now, but every time, every single moment. You always manage to take my breath away, without those...things.”
Junmyeon slightly curved his lips upward. “But you have those...things.”
“I know, which is exactly why I don’t want you to. You’re perfect just like this, and I don’t want you to feel hurt. Remember the last time Kyungsoo sprained his ankle, you acted like you were the one who got hurt? You always feel other people’s pain, and I’m just...I’m trying my best to protect you, because I don’t want you to ever feel painful. You know, the first time I pierced my ear, it hurt like hell. It bled once because I accidentally touched it. I had a hard time sleeping for weeks because I could only face the ceiling and the other positions were uncomfortable.”
“The first time...?”
“Yeah.”
Junmyeon shifted his gaze to Yifan’s ear. “And now you have like...several piercings.”
“...uh...”
“That means...they weren’t that painful...right? I can handle it, Yifan, I promise...”
Yifan sighed deeply, his hand searching for Junmyeon’s. “I don’t care if you say you’re gonna be able to endure the pain. I can’t, okay? I’ll definitely curse myself for letting you do it. And just because Jongdae and Yixing did, doesn’t mean we have to follow their steps... And who says couple earrings are more special? I don’t recall anyone got married by exchanging earrings...” Junmyeon chuckled softly at this. “I’m perfectly okay with our couple rings, because it just shows how much I want to tied you to me. Now do you understand what I feel?”
Junmyeon pressed his lips together for a moment. He weakly nodded as answer.
“Good. I really hope you do. So, no. No piercing for you.”
Junmyeon obediently nodded as he slowly leaned closer to Yifan. “I’m sorry, baby...”
“I’m sorry too, okay?” Yifan pressed a chaste kiss on Junmyeon’s forehead and wrapped a hand around the latter’s shoulder. “What do you say if we go home and-“
“Wu Yifan? Is that you?”
Yifan turned his head to the source of the voice. His eyebrows furrowed together for a few seconds before recognizing who it was. “Chanyeol?”
“Oh my God it really is you!” Chanyeol shrieked (too) happily and he deliberately took the empty seat across Junmyeon. “Your face didn’t change at all! Except your hair, of course. But you know what, blond suits you.” He fell silent for a second and let out another shriek when he spotted Junmyeon. “Holy-is this your boyfriend, Yifan? He’s so beautiful!!”
“Uh, babe, this is Chanyeol, he’s my high school friend-“
“Oh my God, you have no idea how lucky Yifan is to have you,” Chanyeol said to Junmyeon in a serious manner. “This man, yes, this man, your boyfriend,” he pointed offhandedly at Yifan, “was a total ass back in high school. He smoked, but come on, who didn’t, right?” Chanyeol blinked at Junmyeon’s blank expression. “Oh. Oh, you don’t, apparently. Well, there’s always one or two people who don’t...”
Junmyeon blanched and instinctively tightened his grip on Yifan’s arm.
“He skipped class, but don’t you worry, sweetheart, the most important thing was that he didn’t do drugs! Even though his appearance might said otherwise. One glance at him and everyone is terrified. Just look at his piercings, and oh-have you seen his tattoo? It was a total failure, I’m telling you. It was supposed to be-“
Yifan felt like throwing something to stop him from ranting. “Chanyeol, that’s enough, you’re scaring him.”
“Scared? Why is he scared? He’s the greatest person I’ve ever known-for dating you, that’s why,” Chanyeol innocently said. “Back in high school, no one would want to date you-hm?“ He glanced over his shoulder when someone called out his name. A cute guy with bold eyeliner was standing by the entrance, waiting for him. “Ah, that’s my Baek. I need to go...but really nice bumping into you, Yifan!”
“I wish I could say the same,” Yifan said grimly.
“Anyway,” Chanyeol smiled sincerely and grabbed Junmyeon’s hands just before he left. “He’s so lucky to have you. You know, my first impression on you two was that you guys look like angel and devil. You’re definitely the angel, don’t worry. I’m just glad God sent him someone like you.” With that, he stood up to leave and waved them goodbye. “See you around, Yifan.”
It was when Chanyeol had left the cafe that Junmyeon recovered from the shock. Junmyeon cleared his throat, trying to find his voice back. “He’s...nice.”
Yifan groaned. “Yeah, he is, but he really can’t stop talking. And he’s always been like that-very straightforward.”
Junmyeon turned to stare at Yifan. He stared at the taller male for a long moment silently. Yifan finally realized his boyfriend’s gaze on him and turned to him questioningly.
“What?”
“Nothing...”
“Still want that piercing?”
“No...”
Yifan grinned in relief. He playfully nudged Junmyeon’s side. Maybe stumbling upon Chanyeol wasn’t so bad-what Chanyeol had said was entirely true. “Because I’m the devil?”
“No,” Junmyeon genuinely smiled and kissed Yifan’s shoulder. “Because I’m your angel.”
Yifan feigned a scoff.
“What took you so long to realize that?”
End.
“Yifan?”
“Yeah, babe?”
“If piercing isn’t allowed...how about couple tattoos?”
