[ CHARACTER INFORMATION ]

Name: Neku Sakuraba
Age: 15
Gender: Male
Fandom: The World Ends With You (Video Game)
Timeline: Post Week Two, just before waking up at the Scramble Crossing
History: General story - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_World_Ends_With_You
Neku’s story - http://twewy.wikia.com/wiki/Neku_Sakuraba

Character Personality: First and foremost, Neku isn’t a people person. He’s highly reluctant to form close bonds with anyone, let alone interact with someone. At first, he blatantly refused to listen to anyone, but Shiki changes this a little. Neku just wants to be left alone in his own world, living life as he sees fit. He doesn’t form connections easily because he feels that people weigh him down. This stems from the death of a close friend of his in the past, which makes him realize that people will only let him down. Thus, he puts on headphones to block out everyone else, and in the beginning cut scene he even thinks to himself that everyone should keep their opinions to themselves.

He’s also blunt, especially when he talks about other people. Neku tells Shiki to her face that he doesn’t need her and doesn’t need to open up to her. He rarely minces his words, but there are times in which he doesn’t say what he really wants to say. Neku keeps his much of his opinion of someone to himself, and is reluctant to share what’s on his mind. He’s an introvert for the most part, only asking for help when he knows he’s out of his league. The best example is during Week One, when Neku lost all of his memories. He had to rely on Shiki to guide him around Shibuya, not to mention figure out how to complete each mission. Neku takes a realistic approach to life, so much so that he can come off as mean when it’s coupled with his bluntness.

Despite his negative attitude, Neku does have the capacity to care. This is once more seen in Week One, after the truth about Shiki’s entry fee comes to light. He’s sincerely sympathetic to what she’s going through, but he’s very awkward about it. He doesn’t know how to approach her, which is seen in his hesitance to talk to her. Neku has no experience in making things better for someone else, and fumbles when he tries to make an effort to help her. Yet, he does manage to help her get through it all, and encourages her to be herself rather than trying to be her friend, Eri. Because he opened up to her, she becomes his entry fee in the second Game since the entry fee is the thing the Player holds most dear.

As far as his temper goes, it’s pretty fiery. When it’s flared, he can get nasty and start shouting. His patience is somewhere in between easy to anger and not so easy to anger. It really depends on the situation he’s in. For example, he tolerated Joshua in Week Two because he had no choice if he wanted to survive and get Shiki back to her life. Granted, Neku did let his temper go a few times, but they mostly dealt with the truth about his death and Joshua’s connection to it. At the same time, it’s easy to annoy him, perhaps especially with perky people like Shiki (at least in the beginning).

Neku is a firm believer in living life free and “enjoying the moment.” He’s a major CAT fan since it was CAT’s ideals of having a free life that draws him in. His mantra is also thanks to CAT, which is to “enjoy the moment.” He takes it to heart, and openly shows admiration for CAT during Week Two. Essentially, the mysterious figure known as CAT is his idol, and is especially drawn to the paintings CAT creates. The most prominent painting is the mural in the Udagawa Backstreets, which is also the scene of his murder.

Yet, even though he makes an effort to keep people away from him, to ignore their “worlds,” it’s during Week Two that he starts to question whether his philosophy is really the right way to approach it. He starts to wonder if maybe reaching out and trying to understand them is a better way to look at it. Neku is still hesitant to do so, hesitant to open himself up again to other people. Perhaps after hearing his own philosophy from someone else makes him realize that maybe it’s worth his while to try to better understand people, what the “rules” of their worlds are. This is also a combination of being Shiki’s partner and getting to know a little about Sanae Hanekoma, who has given him advice that he’s taken to heart, most likely more so now that he knows that Hanekoma is the man behind CAT. He’s trying to reach out, to expand the horizons of his own world, which is a significant change from the person he used to be, but he’s still got a ways to go.

Character Abilities: Neku has a strong Imagination, which allows him to use the abilities locked inside every pin, called psyches (thus making him a psychomancer). Their abilities are varied. For example, one pin can heal or a different one can use pyrokinesis or another can use telekinesis. He can use six pins at a time, and they have to be on him in order for him to use them. The Player Pin allows him to look into the minds of others, but he can only really look at one person's thoughts at a time. Otherwise, he's perfectly normal.

Character Weaknesses: He's not a social person, not in the least. It's hard for Neku to open up to others, but when he does he's awkward about it. He's starting to try understanding people, but it's still a hard task for him. Neku isn't a person for mincing words too much, though he does keep certain observations and comments to himself. This stems from him not really caring about what people think of him, or even what they had to say. Granted, after Week One with Shiki as his partner, he starts listening to people, but it's a slow change. Neku doesn’t “get” people, but around this time he wants to try to understand them.

Neku’s also got some trust issues, mostly seen in his difficulty to trust Shiki and Joshua, at least at first. However, he will trust his partner since that trust is needed to survive the UG version of Shibuya. Thinking it and actually doing it are two different things, though.

[ SOUL CAMPAIGN SECTION ]

What are the abilities that your character will retain in Soul Campaign? He doesn't really have anything supernatural about him since his power comes from the pins he uses. Because this isn't his world, his pins will be useless, and as a result he won't have any abilities to speak of in Soul Campaign as far as canon is concerned.

What are the weaknesses that your character will lose or gain in Soul Campaign? Trusting people is still an issue, and he won't be defending himself very effectively because of his Weapon form.

[ WEAPON ONLY SECTION ]

Why your character should be a Weapon: As a Player in the Reaper's Game, Neku is faced constantly in life-or-death situations/battles, so he can hold his own in a fight. At first, he didn't really WANT to fight back for another chance at life, but he shows in Week Two that yes, he does want that second chance, even if it's only for Shiki's sake. He’s not a stranger to fighting with a partner, but with the Meister-Weapon system it’s certainly something new for him to deal with.

What is your character's Weapon form?: He takes the form of a pair of headphones! His own pair, to be exact, that perfectly fits the head of any Meister he’s partnered to. Ironically, it’s better to wear them around the neck instead of actually on your head. Neku is always seen with headphones to shut out the noise of other people. He uses them to close himself off, making it seem like he’s not listening to anyone. However, he’s also a lover of music, which ties into his abilities as a Weapon. Neku likes to keep to himself, for people to “stop talking.” Granted, he is starting to change, but a person can’t change overnight, and while he’s somewhat willing to reach out and understand other people, he still has a ways to go. It's also a pun on his kanji, which translate to "sound (ne)" and "manipulation (ku)."

ABILITIES

Air Rave: A loud, cacophonic burst of sound that has the potential to stun and/or temporarily deafen the person nearby, depending on how close they are to Neku. Close proximity can result in both, which is at a maximum of 10 feet. Any further than 10 feet, but within 30 feet are likely to be stunned temporarily. The Meister partnered with Neku is unaffected. This can be used at minimal resonation.

Allegro: A catchy, fast-paced tune that can only be heard by his partnered Meister and the Meisters/Weapons within a 15 feet radius. It gives a slight boost in speed and power to those who can hear it, however if the Meister is someone skilled in unarmed combat (specifically using their fists or feet as weapons), they will receive a moderate boost as opposed to a slight one. This can be used at decent resonation.

Cadence: An explosion of sound so loud you can’t really hear it. It’s loud enough to cause a shockwave, which can knock someone over if they’re not careful. This attack can cause temporary silence/deafness within 60 feet. The Meister he’s partnered to is also affected by the silence, but not by the shockwave. This can be used at good resonation, but has a “cool down” or “recharge” time of two minutes.

Fortissimo: The sound generated in this attack is enough to cause tremors in the ground, tremors that borderline earthquake. It has a high chance of knocking people over. It also has the potential to stun, and deafens those within a 30 foot radius, but silences those beyond 30 feet out to around 75 feet. The Meister partnered to Neku must stand still, and is unaffected by the tremors. This can be used at perfect resonation, but can’t be used again for half an hour.

[ SOUL INFORMATION ]

Soul Description: Closed, Bitter, Hurt, Distant, Realistic, Awkward

Soul Appearance: Primarily blue, though there are some warmer colors that crop up depending on the person he interacts with. Neku does have moments of caring, as seen in Week One with Shiki and during Week Two when he realizes that it's better to understand people rather than throwing out all of their opinions. This is why there would be warm colors if the person he's speaking with happens to be someone relatively close to him. As far as shape is concerned, it would probably look something feline-like as a reference to being a huge CAT fanboy, but the eyes are shaded, the ears covered with headphones, and the mouth is hidden. He's a closed-off character for the most part, until someone bothers him as much as Shiki and Joshua had.
