Happy Anniversary, Girls Aloud!

Nov 30, 2009 19:55

For picspammy's Something Different challenge and in honor of Girls Aloud's seventh anniversary. Plus, I've always wanted to create a list of my favorite GA singles. Basically, I knocked out three completely different things with one swing. I'm v, v proud of myself at the moment. ♥

Seven years ago, Girls Aloud was formed on the ITV television show Popstars: The Rivals. Two years ago, I was introduced to these girls by way of ONTD and their Comic Relief single "Walk This Way" with the Sugababes. At first, I was a little taken back by their cover. I eventually warmed up to it. And I started to play it for a straight month before I forgot about them again. (My computer crashed, lol.) However, that all changed when their Sexy! No No No..., first single from Tangled Up was released. The rest, as they say, is history.

I realized I've never picspam'd my girls excluding a random scene for my tumblr. So I decided to challege myself. For Girls Aloud's seventh birthday, I'll choose my top ten singles, picspam their videos and write a short response about why. This hopefully will entertain my follow Girls Aloud stans and introduce ~nonbelievers~ to their fantastic, fabulous Xenomania-branded pop music.

#10 I Think We're Alone Now (download)

Released 18 December 2006

Running just as fast as we can, holding on to one another's hand.

Okay, I admit following: I never listened to the original version of "I Think We're Alone Now" by Tommy James & the Shondells; I don't like the Tiffany cover because I never was a fan; I know that critics panned their cover; and I may or not know if this song is liked by any other GA fan. But frankly I'm glad it was released. The album mix isn't exactly memorible, and this sinlge mix is fun to lip sync with my hair brush after a stressful day. Mock away. I'm used it it.

#9 Walk This Way (download)

Released 12 March 2007

Singin hey diddle diddle with the kitty in the middle, you were swingin like you just don't care.

I grew up with the Run DMC version of the song, not the Aerosmith original. So I thought Comic Relief asking Girls Aloud and Sugababes to record was cute. And, yeah, this is yet another GA cover that wasn't liked by the critics. I don't know. I just enjoyed all the references to the Run DMC (with Steven Tyler) video, and it was the song I've ever listened to with GA's vocals. It'll always have a place in my heart, if that doesn't sound completely cheesy.

#8 Can't Speak French (download)

Released 14 March 2008

I gotta let you know. I wanna give into my temptation.

While I became a fan of Girls Aloud with Sexy! No No No..., THIS SINGLE OUTTED MYSELF AS A GIRLS ALOUD FAN. I still don't know how that worked out. Sexy! is definitely the better song of the two, and I wasn't afraid of admitting I was a Girls Aloud fan for awhile now. It's just ... I can't really explain my strangeness over this, hahaha. I love everything about the song and video. Can't Speak French was just well done. I wish it charted better (or they released What You Crying For as their summer single.)

I'm sorry though. I can't listen to Je Ne Parle Pas Français. Their French is fantastically embarrassing.

#7 Love Machine (download)

Released 13 September 2004

A little education to kick your motivation. We'll turn the situation round.

YES, THIS IS THE ONLY WHAT WILL THE NEIGHBOURS SAY SINGLE TO CHART ON MY LIST, BUT SOMETHING FROM THE ALBUM ACTUALLY CHARTED UNLIKE SOUND OF THE UNDERGROUND. I really do love WWTNS, but this song was legitimately the best one to be released for the album. (If Graffiti My Soul was actually release, Love Machine would've had serious competition. ♥ ♥) Anyway ... why do I love this song so much? Well, listen to it. It's a fun pop number!

#6 The Promise (download)

Released 19 October 2008

Got my eyes on the prize on see. Are you watching me baby?

If I recall correctly, The Promise was my favorite song for 2008. When it was first released, I may have listened to the radio rip for about FOUR HOURS STRAIGHT. When Girls Aloud first preformed it for X-Factor, I may have watched that twenty times before I went to sleep that night. I was seriously obsessed with this song for a long time. The Promise is a fantastic throwback to another older era, and the music video was lovely. I know it's cliche to say, but I loved everything about it.

#5 Untouchable (download)

Released 27 April 2009

Without any meaning, we're just skin and bone, like beautiful robots dancing alone.

Sometimes I feel like I'm the only one who liked the radio edit. I mean, I didn't like Sarah getting lines from Nicola's epic beginning and some from Cheryl as well, but I thought it was a nice epic if you thought about it was a separate song from the album edit. With all that said, I wish I could go back in time and tell the girls to promote it better. Untouchable is an magnificent song that deserved to easily chart the top ten, not top eleven. ARGGGGGGG. :/

#4 Biology (download)

Released 14 November 2005

Why don’t you fool me, feed me, say you need me without wicked games?

This song made no sense to me when I first heard Biology. I remember that moment clearly. I took my headphones off and yelled, at my loudest, "WHAT THE FUCK DID I JUST LISTENED TO?" I understood what was going on, yet I couldn't process it at all. But by my fifteen listening, I started to dance a bit. By my thirth, I started singing along. Then by my sixtieth, I was praising this song to everyone who would listen. Now this--this was a motherfucking pop song, and it really solidified myself as a Girls Aloud stan. And, goddamn, it was listed on Pitchfork Media's "The Top 500 Tracks of the 2000s" @ No. 245

#3 The Loving Kind (download)

Released 12 January 2009

Standing on a crowded platform, carelessly we lost our way.

Someone referred to this song as "Call the Shots Part II", and I think that's a bit unfair. Despite Call the Shots not appearing on my list of favorite singles, I absolutely adore that song, and that's why I can't stand The Loving Kind being placed in that shadow. If they were placed into a true competition, I'll forever choose this one. Sarah taking the lead was beautiful (in the studio version, haha) and looked her best in ages during the video. (My god.) Nicola killed her pieces. ♥ ♥ ♥ Cheryl sounded sweet. Everyone was on top of their game. It's amazing if I haven't abused that word enough.

#2 Something Kinda Ooooh (download)

Released 23 October 2006

If you want to handle me, you've got to keep up.

... Uh, ♥!! I CANNOT EXPRESS HOW MUCH I LOVE THIS SONG. When I need to be pumped up, I listen to Something Kinda. When I need to be cheered up, I listen to Something Kinda. When I'm bored and have nothing to do, I listen to Something Kinda. There's no situation where I cannot listen to Something Kinda Ooooh. The lyrics to the song is pretty out there. The video is pretty-let's not talk about the cheesy video, haha. BUT GODDAMNIT, I WANT TO MARRY THIS SONG.

#1 Sexy! No No No... (download)

Released August 31, 2007

From top to bottom, I'm the woman sunshine. Ain't no damn reason you'd be leaving my side.

HELL YEAH, SEXY! NO NO NO... IS MY ABSOLUTE FAVORITE GIRLS ALOUD SINGLE. It also may double as my fan-recruiting song! I've never met a person who didn't fall in love with this song even if they didn't like the rest of Girls Aloud's catalogue. IDK, I love the beat. The lyrics are also quite strong, imo. Plus, it's sexy, sexy. I pretty much shouldn't need write way I love this song. I should be able to just say "Sexy! No No No...", and everyone should properly understand.
