[036] Zero San Roku - A Thought on Lucario

If there's one reason more than other that I got Smash Bros. Brawl was because of Lucario. While in PKMN Battle Revolution you are able to play as any Pokémon you like, it still doesn't change that is mostly just a fancy 3D version of the original series. It's beautiful no doubt, but you're still issuing commands through a menu, where in Brawl you can control your character movements, dodge, block, and attack at will.

But that asides, I find interesting that Lucario seems to be a homage to more than one thing, all packed into one big badass puppy, especially Brawl Lucario. For one thing, many fans believe because the Lucario in this game is able to speak he is indeed based or is Sir Aaron's Lucario from the 8th Pokémon movie. I've been a believer that he is, and recently this was reinforced by some of the new trivia on Smash Wiki.

- The Lucario in "Pokémon: Lucario and the Mystery of Mew" can use telepathy to communicate with humans. However, in the series, other Lucario couldn't speak or communicate telepathically. This suggests that the Lucario in Brawl is the same one from the movie.

It stands to say that "The World" of Brawl only the best fighters and strongest fighters can exist there and I believe Sir Aaron's Lucario was much more stronger than Maylene's Lucario.

- Lucario is the only Pokémon not to use the standard Pokémon On-Screen Appearance of emerging from a Poké Ball. This also suggests that the Lucario in Brawl is the same one from the movie, as that Lucario never had a Poké Ball, being from a time when they didn't exist.

Wow, this I hadn't really noticed, but it makes perfect sense to me.

- Lucario's English voice in Brawl is done by Sean Schemmel, who also voiced Lucario in "Pokémon: Lucario and the Mystery of Mew." Schemmel also voiced Goku from the hit anime series "Dragon Ball Z," causing several to remark on the coincidence of the fact that Lucario's Final Smash, Aura Storm, is similar to Goku's signature Kamehameha.

Now this is interesting-- pfft heck I didn't know this one either XD. When I first saw the Japanese version of the movie, my first thought at seeing Lucario use Aura Sphere or his ki attack, was half thinking about Hakkai's ki attack and DBZ Goku's Kamehameha. For awhile I had believed it had been Akira Ishida that voiced Lucario (sounded so much like him!) but his V.A. had turned out to be Daisuke Namikawa, who'd I'd only previously heard in roles with no so much of a deep voice.

It really wouldn't surprise me that somehow Lucario's English V.A. was picked in part because of on-going homage to DBZ and Goku's Kamehameha. I thought the voice sounded familiar when I first started playing, but it'd been awhile since I'd seen seen the movie in English. Thinking how Pokémon is no longer under 4Kids dubbing (the Lucario movie was their last) I'm surprised he was given the voice role in Brawl.

Probably the best screen shot I've gotten of him

Not that I'm complaining Schemmel got it. For one thing I can appreciate the consistency of the voice from anime to game (as is for Sonic nowdays) asides that I think he did a great job voicing Lucario in English, and if this game's Lucario is meant to be Sir Aaron's then it adds a bit of a happier ending to the movie...I doubt anyone else really would be bothered by the "spoiler" since I don't think but a few reading this watch Pokémon anyways.

But, for such a cool Pokémon introduced and so tied in to Ash, it was sad to "see him go." So while the concept of Aura may have been a spin on Star Wars "The Force" it seems Lucario himself is a tribute to Dragon Ball Z and it was our luck that for the English dub this could be added more to for the entertainment of fans. There. I just had to get that thought out.
