So the last two days have been busy and the pace is picking up. Asides working on my resume and starting apply for jobs I have job interview on Monday with a Spanish newspaper here for graphic design. x_x they asked to see my works, and while I explained to them I'm currently working on my portfolio since I'm a student, they said it's okay to bring in digital files. I don't really expect to get the job at all...for these things you should have a printed portfolio, which is what I'm preparing, so I'm taking it more of a practice towards a real interview, as well as learning to explain my projects.
I talked to the job counselor on Wednesday and he says once I have my resume ready, he'll check it and approve it on Monday as well, plus he says to bring in the jobs I want to apply for at the college, because he'll try to talk to them to recommend me as a candidate. He also suggested I should include project in Spanish in my portfolio. The counselor says many employers are looking for graphic designers that can do projects in Spanish, yet when it comes to student portfolios hardly anyone does a project in Spanish, so he believes this could be my edge. Well, if nothing else, this would make a lot easier for me as far as updating my projects going into my portfolio, and even a bit more fun. Though I should probably stay away form using 1337 Chilean Spanish and drive people nuts with that XD
Thursday evening I headed downtown to AIGA's "Curtain Call" event, since my teacher wanted us to attend some type of professional event or write a paper on a local company. The event would be held in a restaurant called “Treebeards.” The goal for AIGA is to gather new members/professionals for the organization, but in general, mostly for people to mingle, network and trade business cards. When they said they would have free drinks didn’t take the meaning to be ‘free booze’ lol. Sure, why not…I’m game for that. The performances from the different groups were the least to say boring and the majority consisted of one minute skits with lame-ass jokes and bad puns on graphic design, they made Mad King Thorn’s jokes look funny (that probably explains the free booze). The only highlight was the short ‘YouTube Break’ when they showed videos. I have to admit though ‘Design Gansta’ was good crack
So mostly sat around the first hour in table eating snacks and messing around with the party toys they’d placed on the tables, looking bored trying to ignore the loud noise from the crowd. Still, un-intentionally I somewhat networked since the group of women that sat at my table gave me their business card when I mentioned I’m a student about to graduate and they wanted my resume, as well as take the number for some other company looking for entry-level people. After the door prize giveaway I came home…was already sleepy plus needed to work on my art project that was due the next day.
Friday was the trip to the Menil collection was okay. The biggest highlight was how many times we got lost getting there XD; But I thank Maria (classmate) for giving me a ride. Mostly we got lost due to trying to avoid the too many traffic accidents on the highways, which led us to bypass the exit we had to take and having to go back all the way around. Nothing too impressive about the Menil collection except maybe how much ‘porn’ some of those artworks really are >>; So yeah…just been really tired with all of this. Gotta get back to preparing for tomorrow.
