Fire for element. Lava for image. It really does fit her, doesn't it?
I will have to say that the first thing I think of with nihonmono!Tonami is smoke - once more tied to the element of fire. I think the way she is so subtle and understated fits smoke better than snow. Even if snow is beautiful, it's also very wet and it leaves a very raw imprint on its surrounding. Smoke on the other hand floats through the air with such ease and its religious significance cannot be stated enough. So, Tonami in nihonmono makes me think of the smoke from insence sticks that are so often used in Buddhist temples.
Maachan in nihonmono makes me think of plum flowers. Again, earth and woods. ♥ It all fits perfectly.
Oh, also, Dan-chan would either team up with Tonami for fire or be the wind. From the lightest wind of spring to the most violent winter storms, you can find everything in her. <3
Yes, I have watched it. It's one of my favourite nihonmono - after Pale Dawn and Sleeping Moon.
However, I would actually say that especially in that, Tonami's role and the way she portrays it was what originally had me think of the smoke from insence sticks. She's so light and not exactly frail, but flimsical. If that makes sense.
Probably that is hard to see me because I tend to run away from any kind of insence stick. ;) I connect a heavy feeling to smoke in general, I can't even say why.
Probably because smoke also comes of fires and tragic events in concerns to fires. I can understand why you don't see the similarity if smoke generally doesn't give you a good feeling. As for me, I love smoke. The smoke of a candle blown out, the smoke of insence sticks (although not the smell, only the smoke floating through the air), things like that. And because I like it, it's how I feel Tonami's presence in nihonmono. But I do think that the notion of snowflakes falling fits her as well, even if it doesn't connect very well with the fire element.
... Ah. I see it. You know... I think Tonami, for me, in nihonmono is the feeling of snow flakes melting on your skin. It's not a soggy feeling, it's just soft and a tad cool. It makes one feel very... bodily in comparison to it. Yes, that is exactly how I experienced Tonami in Hoshikage no Hito.
I have not read those books (although they were recommended to me), but I just had to think of the the title of the book series A song of ice and fire in connection with Tonami. :)
Actually, the heavy feeling isn't connected with tragic events, but much rather with the smell of smoke. The only smoke smell I love is that of just blown-out candles. But now with you speaking about snow flakes not connected to fire, what I just had to think of was the smoke of big fires in which you see little glowing bits that will fall to the earth like snow flakes. I don't connect that particular mental image with Tonami, but it still reminded me a little of fire flakes. ;)
... That is a perfect description of her. And it does connect the two images. I like it.
And now when you say it, I like the idea of those flakes of soot (such an ugly word, though) fluttering through the air. That was very fitting for my idea of her in that role. Well, and it's something I like too. I'm an old girl scout and when we had bonfires and the soot would fly through the air in little dances towards the ground and fall down amongst the embers. Yes. That's Tonami for me. ♥
